Why are consulting firms so touchy on the salary issue?

After a couple of weeks of work at an MBB firm, I still can't get a firm grasp of the firm's raises and salary levels and different seniority levels! You try to talk to people about it and no-one wants to divulge information. HR is tight-lipped as well. All my fellow undergrad consultants are wondering the same thing.

Need reassurance: GMAT scores last for 5 years?

I am almost certain they do and most B-school websites indicated they do. But I have a friend older than I who's applying in the Fall and he says they last for 3 years. I respect him greatly and he generally isn't severely misinformed, but can someone re-assure me that B-schools are OK with scores taken 5 years in the past? Do they have some sort of unofficial deadline at 3 years?

Travel - How does you handle it and what does your firm do to make it less painful?

Getting staffed on a travel assignment soon, rather excited since I was in the home office during my internship. From what I've heard, my firm is pretty good with travel, lots of perks, always a good hotel, generous reimbursement for meals.

I am wondering what others' travel experiences have been like? Horror stories? Kickass adventures? (I am guessing more of the former...)

Also, any tips for staying sane on long travel assignments? How do you handle it/unwind at the hotel?

What's the deal with Bridgewater Associates?

Good? Bad?

A guy from my brother's graduating class from a few years ago has been working there. I didn't know he was interested in finance and I was surprised he got a job at a hedge fund. He tells me his compensation is higher than IB and always has been -- even when he started.

Is this true? Why does this fund take undergrads? What is their function there?

McKinsey & Company vs. Goldman Sachs - for an undergraduate.

Had a few friends who were choosing between these two firms senior year. Two of them when to McKinsey, one went to Goldman. We had a lot of Consulting Vs. Banking back-and-forth, but I'd like to see what arguments this board has in support of either (and I realize that most are going to say Goldman, since this is a banking forum and most don't really know what McKinsey does, so I'll chime in now and then). Just to get the ball rolling here:

Consultant from M/B/B trying to break into PE

Going to work this year at one of the top 3, wondering how I should prep myself to increase odds of getting a PE offer post-consulting.

I was thinking that I should try to specialize in Corp. Finance with some PE Due Diligences here and there. Any advice from consultants who made the move into PE? When did you enter? How did you do it?

Thanks.
