Currently doing equity research at a major asset management house, making Buy/Sell recommendations on stocks. Is it possible to switch from here to equity proprietary trading at BBs? What are the additionl skillsets needed and must one necessarily understand derivatives? Lastly, are there any short courses that one may take to make himself more marketable for a prop desk role? Thanks.

Retrenchment in Buyside?

Read alot about upcoming job cuts at IBs. Will buyside analyst roles in asset management houses or PWMs linked to BBs be affected by the current melt-down? Secondly, would it be a safe move to change job and switch to another asset management house under the current job market condition? Appreciate your views.

Hi, I am currently a buy-side equity analyst looking to break into positions in proprietary trading or hedge funds. Any thoughts on what is the best way to enter this areas? I am thinking of taking the CAIA program which covers stuffs like hedge fund trading strategies etc. Will this program be useful to break into such roles?
