GS Signing Bonus Structure

Are IBD signing bonuses generally structured as "advances" on the first stub bonus? Or are they simply no-strings-attached compensation for signing the employment agreement?

I think GS uses the "advance" structure. Would be interested in learning how different banks approach this.

Researching Deals

I am interviewing with several BBs in Los Angeles and am interested in researching deals their offices have sourced and/or executed. Does anybody have any tips on conducting such research? When I search the WSJ or NYT, I often see information about which BBs are involved, but I rarely see information about which *offices* are executing the deals.

HBS to Los Angeles BB

I'm a first-year at Harvard Business School with no experience in banking. I recently learned that most BBs do not recruit on-campus for their LA offices. I've contacted several banks and have been instructed to apply through their websites. I understand (i.e. I've read elsewhere on this site) that website applications are only viewed to fill spaces not filled through on-campus recruiting.
