PE summer offer

Hey guys,

I’m a junior in Toronto and have been offered a summer analyst position at a PE fund with about $200mm in AUM and 5 people. Do you think with everything going on right now that I should just accept this or hold out for interviews at the investment banks in January?

Some things to consider:
-	All 5 people have prior experience at top ibanks and pe funds
-	A $200 mm pe fund in Toronto is actually on the larger side, probably as rare to find as a $2 billion fund in New York
-	Accepting this offer and reneging is not an option, Bay Street is about 100 times smaller than Wall Street so the whole “everyone in finance knows each other” thing is more serious here
-	There is no guarantee of a FT opportunity
-	I’m not a strong candidate for ibanking interviews this summer

I’m just looking to here what some other people would do in this situation and why.

Forwarding Resume

When you have a contact at a bank (VP/MD level) that asks you to send your resume to him, should you still apply through your school for that position?

I'd like to avoid applying to the bank through the school if possible as I would then have to submit my transcript (big negative) as well. It would be much better if I can just give them my resume with cumulative gpa on it.

This is for Toronto positions btw, I don't think they ask for transcripts in the states.

hey guys,

A contact of mine at ML HK has told me that he can forward my resume for 2009 summer analyst positions?

Do the HK offices typically begin sa recruting this early on? If not, when is the normal period?

Thanks in advance.

I'm applying for a mid market SA position where I have a contact. After I submit my application do you think it would be allright to mention "that I have another offer at a pe firm but that I'm looking for IB work this summer", in a follow up email to my contact?

Associate with Ferrari?

I just had an interview with an associate at a boutique and I specifically saw a Ferrari car key when he placed his key chain on the table as he was trying to find his business card.

Is this typical for an associate, or is he just an overspender or came from a rich family.

boutiques and BB's in Toronto

Anybody in Canada (or who knows about the IB scene in Canada) have any details about Lazard and Greenhill's strength in Toronto? ie. Do they do any execution or have decent deal flow? Exit opps? Pay? hours?

How do they rank up to the other BB satelite offices such as GS, JPM, CS, Lehman and UBS. Seems like MS/Citi and Merrill Lynch have the biggest operations in Toronto.

Thanks.
