BlackRock PAG SA - The Next Steps

Hey everyone! I'm a junior, new to the forum, looking forward to your insight.

I recently received an offer at BlackRock PAG in Tokyo, and I'll most likely be taking it.

Initially I was quite happy - sounded like an opportunity to build a strong analytical foundation within a great company in a city I've never before experienced. Then I started clicking around WSO for some thoughts and I'm...not quite as happy as I was, haha.

I understand that this is a middle office ish role, but is it really the dead end that some make it out to be? My career goals/preferences are PMG (at BLK), Corporate Strategy (at BLK or elsewhere) or Management Consulting, in that order (but I'd be thrilled about any of the three). I have no interest in IB, S&T, PE, HF.

BLK seemed keen on retaining summer interns as full-time analysts, so I'm wondering...how far can this summer opportunity take me? If I had the good fortune of receiving a full-time offer and immediately focused my efforts on the PMG transition, is it a realistic goal? Seeing as the Tokyo office is relatively smaller than New York and a seemingly tight-knit community across divisions, I'm trying to be optimistic. If not, please be honest with me, and let me know if you have suggestions for the future.

All in all though, still grateful and excited!

Thanks in advance for your input :)

A lot of the PMs and strategists in PMG started out in PAG. I don't know why so many people talk about PAG like it's a dead end. It's not. The things you will learn in PAG about the risk analytics, tools, and systems are irreplaceable--and frankly, becomes valuable knowledge when you move around the firm. I would stay 2 years in the division and see how you feel in terms of moving groups. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong starting your career in PAG. A lot of senior management that are now in different parts of the firm started in PAG.

By the way, I have friends over in the Tokyo office (in PAG). Feel free to let me know if you'd like me to introduce you. PM me if you are interested.
