Morningstar to Asset Management.. possible?
As the title suggests, how realistic is this transition? I'm talking about BlackRock, state street, Asset Management arms of IBs etc
I'm going to be working there fairly soon in either a fund analyst role or an equity research type role.. which would generate the maximum chance of making the jump? Fund analysts would present some nice opportunities to be but I'm not sure if grilling fund managers is the right way of trying to get into one..
Alternatively, equity research is good..IF the jump is POSSIBLE then i'd be competing with alot of the sell side guys who have more prestige attached to their employers and stronger reputed head analysts..
What do you guys think? Do you guys know of any morningstar people going over to asset management?
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I guess thats a no.
Anyone else?
I've definitely seen this done. Well done.
Try and get into equity research for sure, the skillset will be highly transferrable (same). Since you will be helping to cover a sector and nit leading idea geenration, Please also make sure to somehow document both successful and unsuccessful investment ideas.
Since you will most likely produce research for instintutionL investors your contact points within your specific sector will be good and leverageabke only if u can network and are personable - this is a big part of your jump to buyside, without the networking aspect u will be relying on head hunters who won't really value morningstar, but if u know enough ppl and enough ppl know ur good this will be superior as a networking platform vs top head hunters I've met some former morningstar analysts who now work at a some am arms of bbs and also some who now manage a small cap portfolio somewhere i forget but they were rockstars and likely could have done anything they wanted to had they been a bit luckier and gotten In good sell side firms. Alsoimportnt develop mgmt team contacts which will increase ur attractiveness to a buyside shop looking for someone that's self sufficient
Thanks
If you do the funds research you have no shot at asset management, if you do equity research you definitely have a chance at the buyside but you are going to have to truly impress someone because even from bulge brackets getting to the buyside right now is not an easy task. As someone above said, you are going t o have to be an incredible networker, and I don't mean collecting business cards, I mean establishing personal relationships where people think of you more of a friend than a service provider.
