jumping to MBB after Google
Hey all,
landed a summer internship at Google (people operations, not engineering/coding), going to work hard and hopefully land a full-time offer. if that doesn't work out, how would google look on my resume in terms of me getting interviews with MBB for full-time?
basically what i'm asking is, how much will having Google on my resume make up for a crappy gpa (sub 3.5) and a bad SAT score (though I'm planning on taking the GMAT at the end of summer to mitigate that)? I believe those were the main reasons I didn't get any MBB interviews for summer, otherwise i think my resume is pretty good (albeit, not really business-related).
Google isn't that great these days, and your internship sounds like HR.
For those who don't know, people operations @ Google = HR @ everywhere else.
I wouldn't have high hopes for MBB. MBBs are highly selective and, personally, I think getting a FT offer at GS/MS/JPM is much easier than at MBB.
.
It's a good brand, but it is definitely back office, HR type work.
Is there any possible way for you to leverage this into a more analytically intensive or client facing internship? FP&A, treasury, even Sales would all be substantially better. Marketing is pretty big within Google, but they get pretty selective (it's their internal "fast track" for the non-tech side). At the very least, get onto the analytics team in HR.
Mercer would be very realistic, even with your GPA. That could give you the brand needed to go to a good MBA, then on to MBB. However, you could probably stay at Google and get similar business school placement.
MBB are kind of GPA snobs, unfortunately. That said, Google is to a large extent the same. Are there any alums you could network with at MBB? Or, at Google, do you have alums not in HR who could pull you into their dept? Really, just about anything at Google is a step up from HR.
Google is a good name to have on your resume but an HR internship isn't going to turn any heads when the competition is at the level of MBB. Without knowing your school, major, and other qualifications it is impossible to say what your chances are. However, a low GPA and a low SAT is going to be hard to overcome without great reasons or great networking.
having below a 3.5 and getting an interview at MBB is going to be EXTREMELY CHALLENGING.
holy crap im screwed
