Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution

Hi, does anybody know anything about this division? Interviewing for a “Deal Analysis Intern” position and have been told that they work closely with the sales team.

Based on LinkedIn searches, I’m sure it’s nothing near the caliber of Disney’s Corp Strat / Biz Dev division, but what are your thoughts? It sounds like strategy to me since they apparently manage monetization with Disney+, Hulu, etc. I’m not interested in IB/PE/VC, just corporate finance and I’ll paste some of the job description for reference:

The Walt Disney Company's Disney's Media & Entertainment Distribution (DMED) is a global business segment for The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) with the mission of providing consumers around the world access to the content they want most, on the latest platforms, at a time of rapidly-evolving consumer habits. Combining the Company's direct-to-consumer streaming services - ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu -- and third party distribution parties, alongside Disney's international media businesses, MED aligns cutting edge technology with world-class content and beloved brands to expand the Company's global footprint and deliver highly-personalized entertainment experiences to diverse consumers around the world.

The Distribution Planning & Analysis division is responsible for the support of Disney's Direct to Consumer streaming services (Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu). The team provides rights management and deal valuation for all digital and linear sales.

The intern will be part of the team that is directly responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely availability of content (long form feature films, Disney+ originals, episodic content, promos, bonus, interstitials, etc.) for Disney+ in the all live territories. In addition, the candidate will also support deal making for the sales of TWDC content in the US and Canada. More specifically, this person will provide day-to-day support of TWDC's content sales activities with select accounts by ensuring robust deal analysis and content valuation.

  • Proactively update and seek product information from business units and be accountable for the consistency and integrity of product data in database systems
  • Administer and manage all such deals post-entry, e.g., draft and send notices (start dates, new seasons, etc.), license fee calculations, invoices, etc.
  • Support and collaborate with TWDC's US sales team, Business, Operations, Legal, Finance and Accounting with all pre-sale and post-sales roles related to distribution and licensing of TWDC content to US clients (linear, AVOD, SVOD).
  • Manage the availabilities and license of all content to Disney+
  • In conjunction with the analysis team, works with territories, and in collaboration with the overall Disney+ Programming Strategy team, provides accurate availabilities of content, including calculating start and end dates based on complex holdback rules, airdates, and windowing strategy. This role requires the ability to digest complex, pan regional licenses, and to arbitrate across multiple teams where territories are shared.
  • Assisting with Ad Hoc analysis of deals and opportunities as advised by senior management.

Can’t provide answers to your questions, but sounds pretty cool as a role.

Just FYI I’ve known that Disney tends to underpay (especially in tech roles) because of the fan base appeal of working there. They know they have a big brand name that has a lot of nostalgia and emotion surrounding it, FWIW to you.

Do you happen to know how low the comp would be? It seems like $65k for fresh undergrads is pretty average in corporate finance so I’ve been aiming to find something higher than that. It’s also in a pretty HCOL area so I’d imagine they’d start higher than that…

Also, in your opinion would a finance/strategy role like this help with exits into higher paying areas like tech?
