Exit options? - 8 years of experience in finance and corp dev
Hello chimps,
I'm looking for some advice. I was recently laid off and I'm trying to figure out what exit options are possible for someone with 8 years of experience in finance and corp dev (3 years in corp dev, 5 years in finance/fp&a). My most recent position was in corporate development at a small to mid-sized public company and I worked there for 3 years before getting laid off. Prior to that, I worked in finance/fp&a at a F500 company. Non target who worked his ass off to get the job in corp dev... I really enjoyed the job, but I also felt like an imposter and I think that may have contributed to my downfall. Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks!
Why not go back into fp&a? Could try for other corporate finance roles like IR too but fp&a would likely be the path of least resistance.
Thanks for the response. That's what I was thinking as well.. I've been focused on fp&a roles, but striking out over the past couple of months. Before I moved into corp dev, I was constantly receiving job opportunities in fp&a. Perhaps my move into corp dev is being viewed negatively?
It probably is. To use an extreme example, its like being 3 years into an Associate role at a private equity fund and then applying for Assoc / VP IBD roles, people will think you will only take it as a last resort. I had similar trouble when initially recruiting for consulting after banking internships, folks only assumed I would take it as a backup unless I networked and proved real interest.
