Starting a SA IBD (Australia) gig in December, and am spending 2013 on exchange in the US. Looking to buy my suits etc (everything I'll need) in the US because I leave the US and start my internship 2 days after I get back to Australia. I've already seen a post on SA clothing, but I'm curious- what do people think of/know about J-Crew's suits? I love the way they look but have heard they don't hold up too well, and don't really want to buy 3 suits from there if they won't last.
Also, 3 suits, 6 shirts, 8-10 ties, brown/black belts and shoes (plus enough socks etc)- enough, or not?
don't buy J Crew. Get something more traditional and with better quality. Not saying you need to spend a lot, but you can def find better value.
It's okay to go slim fitting to an extent, but don't go overboard if you want to look professional. j crews suits are overboard.
Agree with above. I think they are okay suits, but for the price, you could definitely do better.
I'd say Brooks Brothers. If not suits, the non-iron shirts hold up pretty well.
just to provide a contrarian view, i would at least go and try them on. i have a very slender body frame and having tried everything in the city (brooks, suit supply, etc.) j crew ludlow fit me extremely well off the rack and required minimal tailoring. only thing that fit me better was high, high end suits at $1.5K++.
was complemented by a number of people at work (GS/MS top group, if you happen to care). i got a plain charcoal/navy wool suit with the regular pants (not the slim ones).
on the other hand, even the most slim fit brooks one fit me like a bedsheet with a hole cut out for my head. even if the build quality is better, i don't like having to buy a suit and then undergo some pretty meaningful alterations. in terms of build quality, i don't wear my jacket 24/7. i put it on in the morning, wear in the subway, take it off when i get to my desk, put it back on when i go home. at most, some client meetings.
had the suit for over a year now, traveled with it, interviewed with it, it's held up well.
i think you should at least check them out. just my $0.02.
Will definitely check them out, thanks for the info- my main concern was whether they'd look professional enough but it seems like they do. Appreciate the advice. In terms of tailoring, did J-Crew alter the suits for you, or at least suggest a tailor? And do you wear the Ludlow shirts? Any advice on how many dress shirts you need/use etc would also be great.
Update (if anyone cares): had a closer look at J-Crew etc and realized that the only suits I'd really want (wool) are $650, and I can get comparable quality wool suits from Suit Supply for $400-$600 (if not better suits- as one example, the Suit Supply suits have functional jacket buttons, which I like). Looks like that will now be my first stop. I still really like the Ludlow dress shirts though (love spread collars)- any opinions on those?

check out proper suit, they may have some lower cost options that are competitive with jcrew pricing.
I think you may be overestimating the cost of a J-Crew suit...the Proper Suit cheapest option is $750, and all but one or two of the most expensive J-Crew suits are capped at $650. It's possible to get pretty nice (at least online) J-Crew suits for $450-$500.
Styleforum has a good suit tier list.
