How can I make the transition?
Hello, I am currently a first-year analyst at a BB in AM. I graduated in 2021 from what is considered a strong target on wso (non-HYPWh ivy). I initially thought and still think that AM/institutional investment management is where I want to be long term. However, something that I have seen increasingly from my interactions with senior folks is that most of them had the more traditional backgrounds, e.g. - IB -->PE/HF/PC to the seat where they sit in now. I was speaking with one of my mentors at the firm who did the same and he said doing so had provided him with a much stronger base to build up from in his current AM role. I enjoy the day-to-day work that I do, however, I am also interested in getting a taste of the investing/advisory world. I feel like it would be much easier (relatively) to make that transition now as opposed to when I am an MD in twenty years. As such, I want to try to transition to an IB/financial advisory role to get some more "roll my sleeves up" kind of finance experience and really get into depth with financial modeling. My current plan is to spend a couple of hours every day after work to review accounting, excel, financial modeling to the point that I can build a full model (was in finance club in college and did it there, but obviously that is much more different) and be able to walk through it and then start networking with people with similar backgrounds. In this process, what can I do to 1) make my learning process go by easier/more smoothly 2) are there any books/textbooks that can be good resources and 3) what should my priority be in this process? I anticipate it being at least another 4-6 months before I can really think about stepping out and interviewing.
