Semi-Target Chances

Okay, here's my situation: I am a Junior looking to be a summer analyst. I go to a school that only has a few of the top 10 banks recruiting at it, though. I will of course be trying at those bank for jobs, but I know the success % can be quite low so I want to get as many inverviews as possible.

I have a pretty good resume:
-Interned at a small IB last summer
-3.7+ GPA
-Leadership in EC's
-1500 SAT

So basically my question is, since I do go to a good school, as judged by the fact that some BB's do recruit here, do I have any chance at the online application of the other BB's with my resume? Or am I, like everyone else who applies online, doomed, unless of course I network very well.

Also, in reference to networking: when contacting alumni in the attempt of getting your resume a look, is there a minimum level that you should bother talking to?

Do analysts or associates have any real pull? What about VPs? How about alumni in HR? Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not worried about the IB's that do recruit at my school...I'm wondering about the ones that don't.

You got a solid set of numbers there. With banks recruiting on campus, I reckon you have a very good shot at interviews; and depending on your interviewing abilities, a good shot at getting a position. I wouldn't fret about not having EVERY bank you want recruiting. Some beats none.

Don't get discouraged, I go to a small school in Texas that nobody in New York (save for alums) have ever heard of. If you work hard enough to get those interviews you should be fine. You just have to be persistent, use every possible resource you can think of and don't give up until you have what you want. Good luck!

Analysts and associates have the most pull to get you in the first round. They are the ones who review the resumes and pick first round candidates. You can spend your time impressing VPs and above in the interview.

how should you go about getting the analysts etc to get you into that first round? Do you badger them with questions and then ask if they can pull a few strings? or what?

never ever hint to an analyst that you want them to pull strings for you. do not badger them with questions.

you should try to gel with them on topics outside of banking. if you can talk about something else (Yankees, football, whatever) you are much more likely to be remembered by the analyst once he/she leaves campus.

Yeah, we have quite a lot of alumni at every major bank, so i guess the best bet is to contact as many as possible and hope a few are willing to go to bat for me
