Summer Analyst -> Return Offer In Different City? Possible?

Hey fellas,

Just curious if its possible to get a return offer from a BB (IBD) and have them direct the return offer to another office in the region? The move I am looking to make is Beijing -> Hong Kong, but obviously any anecdotes for similar moves would be great (NY -> LA, Paris -> LDN, etc).

Thanks.

I would talk to folks in Hong Kong on the DL

Get the return offer and then let your staffer know you're interested in x office

Do NOT bring it up until you have an offer

If the bank is GS, they will be very receptive and make it happen. Most BBs will make it happen if there is a spot but GS is exceptionally receptive

I think GS is open to internal mobility more than most firms. They even have a concrete process for interns released some weeks into the summer to formally apply to X group in Y division at Z location. Probably what Mark2010 is getting at.

I've definitely heard of people moving geographically at other firms too (eg going from a summer at Wells in NC to full time in NY)

Once you get the full time offer, then you can ask for a different office. At that point, it doesn't hurt to ask because the worst thing they can do is say no.

I know smaller firms (boutiques/ elite boutiques) are not receptive of this from my experience because you get trained on how the team operates and how they want things done. Wasting their time if they train you over the summer and you move to a different team that might operate differently.

From what I gathered in my Houston search they really don't like it, especially if you misrepresented your interest in working in Houston for the interview process. That said if you are quite talented and perform well in your internship it should be possible. You should know best what the BBs view on talent management is. For instance I got the sense someone like JPM might not care too much but someone like GS might care a lot.
