Getting a Finance Job in Japan

Hello fellow Chimps,

I was wondering if it's possible to secure a finance job in Japan without knowing Japanese and how to achieve it.

Here's a bit about my background:

  • I'm graduating with a Master's degree this year from a reputable European Business School, ranking within the top 10-20.
  • I have completed an internship in B4 Audit.
  • I am fluent in two major European languages, in addition to English.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or insights you can offer!

Kind regards,

AlphaMalpa

If you’re referring to a front office IB job, then it’s quite unlikely. Being able to work in Japanese is effectively a pre-requisite these days. I was looking for roles and met/spoke with several headhunters in Tokyo in 2019 including with HR at the bank I worked at. There may be the odd equity role which you might just about get away with, but those would be few and far between.

There used to be more non-Japanese speaking expats pre-Fukushima, but when the earthquake happened, a lot of the expats in front office IB roles rushed for the exits, which caused companies to avoid having expats again.

Professional jobs in Japan which are possible without the language are typically in IT and potentially some consulting roles.
