Relocating to Hong Kong from the US
Strange enough and quite possibly a contrarian move, I'll be relocating to Hong Kong from the US. Background is in corporate credit / LF. Currently at a tier 2 US bank.
If internal transfer doesn't work out (heard might be tough for my level which is senior VP / director), I'll have to look for fresh opportunities. Preferably remain on the credit side, but open to things.
Any insight as to what market (incl. job market) is like in Hong Kong these days? Deal flow? Goods & bads?
Why Hong Kong?
It’s a dictatorship…
Are you Chinese
Chinese American. Fluent in Mandarin and Canton
was a great place probably a decade ago. heard deal flow was insane and technicals weren't prioritized solely because the churn of materials was too much
Now? heard it's overrun by the mainlanders, deal flow is weak and most foreigners prefer Singapore. hong kongers are worried they're going to be just another city of China but what can they do?
Appreciate the comment here. My wife is getting a great relocation package there and it just happens that her firm’s asia office is in HK and not any of the Singapore, Tokyo, Mumbai, Sydney, etc. and her role is pan Asia Pacific. Unless I get divorced, I’ll have to take whatever is available, but luckily I have plenty of time to figure things out.
Putting aside the social changes, is HK really that bad these days as a place to live and work? Secondly, I would have thought if a lot of people are trying to get out, that could present as an opportunity for me.

thinking about a similar move - but at the analyst level
Same background - I've been trying to pull the same move over the past few months. From what I've gathered, it's pretty tough right now given macro/geopolitics and deal flow slump. Watching on the sidelines to see if activities start to pick up in H2 this year, or maybe H1'25...
