how did you land a gig in Germany?
Networked through linkedin with an analyst who got me an internship interview. From there on out it was like with any IB job - do well in internship and get a return offer. Got lucky that my firm does not require German proficiency

Would love to get your perspective on lateraling from a U.S. firm to Germany at the associate and above level.
Sure. It's actually quite easy. You can enter Germany as a tourist for 90 days without a visa and commence your job search. Once you have an offer, you can apply for a work permit which costs 60eur and you get it about 3 weeks after you apply.
As far as getting the job, in investement banking, as in the US, the best way to go about a job search is through networking, but I think us Europeans are more likely to give a damn about an online resume drop so doesn't hurt to try that as well. There is a large amount of headhunters specializing in the dach region, one I keep seeing on linkedin is Richmond Wolf.
I would not recommend Frankfurt. While all the big bangs are there, the quality of life is subpar to Munich. Sure, if you are a banker you'll have a good salary and everything, but the city is dirty and quite empty/boring on weekends.

i actually interned at an asset management firm in munich. loved it even got to chat with some PE guys for full time offer. How’s the tax situation working there full time?
Not the greatest. High income earners (i.e., all investment bankers) are taxed about 45% on both base and bonus.
This has nothing to do with your post but I will be flying into Frankfurt in mid April and have two weeks to travel before flying back home (leaving as well from Frankfurt).
What suggestions do you have? Are there any beer festivals/activities going on from mid-April through end of April in Frankfurt/Munich/Stuttgard/Prague/Interlaken etc that I must go to?

Well I'm fairly new here and don't know much about anything outside of Munich, but if you're in Munich, some things to consider: Isle of Summer Open Air, Amsterdam Meets Munich, Munich Gin Festival, Fruhlingsfest Munchen.
There's also a great variety of amazing bars and restaurants to explore, and lots of culture as well. Munich is very diverse and has a lot to offer.
Will be traveling to meet my friends in Munich and Frankfurt post-Covid, so interested in meeting up at some point when lockdowns have ended and everybody is vaccinated.
