Has anyone heard about this social, knockoff, black-card group in NY called Magnises? I have a friend who invited me to one of their happy hours at the condo they own in the West Village. I had briefly read about the concept through a link that someone had sent me, and with full disclosure, went into this event with the expectation that I would be mingling with some genuine squids.
Needless to say that's exactly the vibe I got from these guys. Borderline upper class white guys whose parents are without a doubt paying their rent on the UES. Mostly seemed like guys that were upset that Greek life had ended when they graduated, and thought this would be the next best thing. Girls there were all smokes, surprisingly enough though.
Anyone else heard, or is anyone here a member?

Sounds dumb, you can get the Visa black card for about the same as the Amex Platinum, I still think that the Platinum is a better card.
OP sounds bitter he never joined greek life. Having moved to two large cities with no social circle, I think this would definitely be helpful. I wouldn't put any weight into the "prestige" factor of it, though.

Seems really desperate. My baby cousin picked out my debit card, she decided I should have a white and pink hello kitty card. Little bastard. Embarrassing? At first especially since by all accounts I'm a big guy (very fit), but it pays because then I get to tell whichever woman points it out the story of how I promised my little cousin she could pick it out, blah blah blah. Get the number.
Long story short, you can probably get more pussy with a hello kitty card than you can with a Magnises. Oh very cool card is it an Amex? "Well no, actually I had my Wells Fargo magnetic strip transferred to this one to look cool, but they are really really similar though!!" I'm trying to picture this conversation in my mind and I can't see it going over well.

Yup, have a few cute pictures to flip through my phone in case she's receptive and decide I want to go that route (25% of the time). Sitting on my shoulders and another one with a bucket on her head. Since I have my phone out, might as well get the girl's number I'm talking to. I call it the "there is no cow level" combo.
P.S.. To prospective monkeys out there... I don't whip the card out hoping it gets noticed.

I honestly don't see the point of either this card or the black AmEx... I have to pay for the privilege of being able to spend my own money? What joy...
Selling status symbols is great business, though, if you can make it happen.
Black Amex gives you a buy 1 international first class flight, get one free. Or something to that effect which means it'll pay for itself. If you already spend that kind of money you might as well.
Please don't compare this ridiculous service to motherfucking AMEX black card.
They are both equally ridiculous, in my view. You, of course, are entitled to your own opinions.
You get a Centurion card for the ease of picking up 10s. I bet the 2,500 a year I pay to have that card is far less than the bar tab you run up every year trying and failing to pick up ass.

On a side note the article said they had to decide if you were cool enough for the card then they said this.
