I did the opposite a few months ago. I ordered moving boxes on Amazon and packed as much as I could into them. Then I carried them to USPS and mailed them to my new address. It was about $150 to $200 per box, and I probably shipped 5 boxes. When I flew to NYC, I checked 4 suitcases and a duffel bag and carried a full backpack and another duffel bag. I sold or got rid of all my furniture in SF since it was cheaper to buy all new furniture than it was to ship my things across the country (I moved into a studio apartment, so I didn't really own much to begin with).

If you have lots of furniture that you want to keep, there are plenty of companies that do SF to NYC or NYC to SF moves specifically. Check MoveBuddha.com.
