Ha, ha
You can start looking at PE associations such as those in Croatia and Serbia. Also see if certain European funds have a specific Balkan team or do Balkan deals.
I found the Croatian PE website shortly after posting, some decent firms there. In terms of US and European PE funds doing Balkan deals, do you know of any MM or UMM funds doing so, considering the scant information out there.
Not many but the few I know are mainly PE and do some LMM work:
KJK Management works in those regions and was started by ex-Danske Bank guys
Mid Europa Partners
Advent International has some Balkan investments to look in to
Thanks for the list. How hard would it be for someone transitioning from MM/UMM PE in the US who then went to Europe for PE, to come back to PE in the US?
I'm not too familiar with that side of things but I would imagine that it depends on the firm. In the eyes of US firms, EU5 and Nordics are still the priority markets so having spent 2-3 years working solely in the Balkans may not resonate much. Going to a mid or top tier firm and doing some Balkans work there should be fine. I guess as you become more senior, the main variables people look at when you want to join another firm are skills and contacts. If you developed a strong network in Europe and improved your skills significantly you would still be a valuable hire.
