PE recruiting in APAC - advice needed!

Anyone know how PE recruiting works in the APAC region? Who are the headhunters I should be in touch with? I’m a 2nd year BB analyst in NYC, and am looking to recruit for MF PE opportunities in Asia. I am specifically interested in working in either Hong Kong or Singapore, although I must note that I do not speak Mandarin (I’m Korean). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You have an uphill battle ahead of you, but it’s by no means insurmountable.

Recruiting for most front office IB/PE roles in HK will usually almost certainly favour native Mandarin speakers (sometimes Canto speakers too). Singapore is the exception and you’ll likely have an easier run at things. Start reaching out and getting virtual chats booked in the same way you would in the US.

One area of strength you have is the ability to transfer internally to a Korean coverage group (lots of these in HK) and then try to move to a PE from there. Don’t buy into the narrative that you can’t move to PE as an Associate, that’s complete rubbish, so you have plenty of time.

Word of caution however. If you think NYC has a grindy banking culture, Hong Kong will make NYC look like a bunch of amateurs in hours worked per week. And even worse there still if you end up at any of the big Chinese IPO factories. Something to consider.
