Sounds pretty liberal to me
Sounds like it's heavy on the design side. Regardless, the Bay area is not a bad place to be and the only other program it's really competing with in California is USC (albeit mostly Southern Cali). They will obviously have quirks to work out over the next several years, but with Berkeley's brand name and location alone I'm sure this will be another top program over time. Another one to add the mix of MSRE/MSRED programs.
All about branding for them. Every program teaches “sustainable, equitable and prosperous cities," New Urbanism, TND, green building and whatnot. That's not "progressive" - that's just real estate in 2017. Some companies pay it lip service and others actually believe it, but that's beyond the point. Some people like green building because it saves the planet - others like it because it helps the bottom line. Some people like communities built to encourage active lifestyles because it's a health benefit - others like it because you can charge more in rent. Some people like workforce housing because it helps people afford a place to live - others like it because some cities give you a density bonus for it and you can build more market rate units as a result. Who cares what the motivation is?
Labeling this stuff as "progressive" is incredibly detrimental to proper urban design and sustainability because it immediately invites half of the country to be against it, politicizing an issue that should not be a matter of right and left. Thriving, property designed spaces help both liberals and conservatives. I hope this is just a reporter making this claim and not the program itself.
Idk if the issue here is the reporters (or the university's) description or that people automatically recoil into their partisan bullshit and are against something without any respect for context.
The MRED+D curriculum includes a set of nine (10) required courses and one (1) elective:
5 Real Estate Development Seminars, including the development process, real estate finance, land-use law, public-private partnerships, and professional practice 3 Design Seminars, including sustainable development, architecture and urbanism, resilient development and design The Omnibus Studio, in which collaborative teams investigate a complex domestic or international development project A Capstone Project, the program’s summative professional project 1 Elective from the approved list
Those may be the required classes but depending on your previous experience you may be able to test out of some and also be able to take more classes outside of the program to supplement your education needs depending on your post-graduation career focus. I took 3 additional MBA courses, 2 Law courses, 1 Urban Planning course, and a few workshops such as ARGUS training. So yes you could take just the minimum required courses but it's up to you to take on more or even join some real estate case competition teams.
Bump. Any recent info on this program?
