Ah, the elusive world of Canadian infrastructure banking! It's like trying to find a polite conversation about hockey teams in Toronto – rare but precious. Based on the most helpful WSO content, infrastructure is indeed a niche area in Canadian investment banking, and there's not a ton of chatter about it. However, when it comes to the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), it's a bit of a unique beast.
The CIB is a government-owned entity, so it's not your typical investment bank. It's designed to work with public and private sectors to fund new infrastructure projects that are in the public interest. As for how it's regarded on the street, it's not directly comparable to the private sector banks, but it does have a significant role in funding large-scale projects.
Regarding compensation and culture, it's tricky. Since it's not a private sector entity, the compensation might not be on par with the Big 5's infra groups, but it could offer other benefits like stability and the chance to work on impactful projects. The culture is likely to be a blend of public service ethos and financial rigor.
Now, about the Ontario Infrastructure Bank – this is a fresh player in the game, and its impact on the CIB could be multifaceted. It could potentially create more opportunities for collaboration or competition in the infrastructure financing space. It might also influence the types of projects that get greenlit and the overall landscape of infrastructure financing in Ontario.
If you're looking to get the inside scoop on either of these entities, networking is key. Try to connect with folks who've worked there or are currently in the trenches. They'll have the golden nuggets of wisdom you're seeking. And remember, in the world of niche finance sectors, the grapevine is your best friend. Keep your ear to the ground, and you'll pick up the vibrations of the street.

You’re gonna want to likely have project finance/ infra experience to get in.
Have a friend that's a senior manager at the shop. Coming from a CRE background, I've noticed that alot of the team is ex IB or big4. He did mentioned you have to be really good at financial modeling or come from a real estate developer background if not project finance/the previously mentioned
What is the hiring process like for infra? They are hiring for associates and analysts..
