All french bachelor's are terrible... unfortunately the system works with prepa + integrated master.
BBA at ESSEC is like doing compliance at Goldman Sachs
You get the brand but the programme itself is poor
More seriously, in France Grande Ecoles programmes (after prepa) are prestigious, and bachelors are there mainly to bring more cash to the schools, but they are not well recognised in France. Abroad it can be seen better from people who know the brand ESSEC but are not familiar with the French system
For BBA which one would you recommend? I got into IE, Esade, ESSEC and EDHEC, my goal is to work at an investment bank, which of these universities do you think will help me do this?
None are top notch (meaning among the best in Eurpope) but would say Esade.
ESSEC Grande Ecole (MiM) student here. Business schools BBA tend to not have the best reputation in France. I know a few ESSEC BBA students who have broken into M&A (so it's not impossible) but my previous team at a big French bank would automatically reject all BBA students (ESSEC and ESCP included). However, I do know a few students who did master's degrees at HEC, ESSEC, ESCP (etc) after their French BBAs and redeemed themselves
Okay thank you! So you would rather recommend to do my bachelor somewhere else and then maybe come to France for my masters?
If you can, I would definitely recommend that! The ESSEC BBA isn't cheap by any means, so you might as well spend your €€€ at a good bachelor's degree. I did mine in the UK (pre-Brexit, so I don't what the tuition fees are like now) and then came to ESSEC for my MiM. I heard Bocconi's bachelor's is pretty good but I may be wrong
I'm Spanish actually! I am a bit biased against IE's bachelor degrees, since the dumbest people in my promotion at high school were the ones who went to IE (those who couldn't get into good public unis in Spain or couldn't make it to the UK). However, those classmates of mine who went to ESADE got into pretty good companies (three of them are doing consulting at MBB now). The thing with these business schools is that they traditionally just offered master's degrees, and they've started offering bachelor's degrees pretty recently, so they tend to be less strict with their requirements. However I do think that both IE and ESADE are great schools for your bachelor's.
PS: one of my classmates at ESSEC was an IE bachelor's alumnus
Okay thank you, that is really helpful! TBH I am currently really thinking to attend IE because they have those dope dual degrees and Campus + I think Madrid is awesome. So do you think that IE could give me a really solide background?
I personally haven't done much research on their bachelor's programs but I do think that IE/ESADE bachelor's degrees have a better reputation than ESSEC/ESCP, mainly due to the fact that the golden route in France is Preparatory Classes + Grande Ecole (MiM). Madrid is an amazing city to be a student, it's definitely less expensive than other European capitals yet you're getting all the fun from living in a big city. Then if you want you can go ahead and get your master's degree from a top French (or any other) school!
Okay, thank you for all the answers! I will now have to choose between Bocconi and IE/ESADE… Do you think a bachelor from Bocconi would be way more accredited than the Spanish ones?
I can't really back my answer for this one but I do think that the bachelor at Bocconi is better regarded than the ones at IE/ESADE. If anyone got better insights into this please do not hesitate to jump in!
IE bachelor is pure shit. ESADE is clearly better.
Why?
IE has no selection, you can pay you get in. ESADE is also expensive but they are more selective.
Okay thank you! May I ask from where you have the insights?
People I know, I did a bachelor myself and some friends went to both IE and ESADE. Confirms what I say.
Also for international students? (As I am international an IE seems a bit more international)
IE has larger programs so can explain the difference. I would still say ESADE is better due to the fact it is a non-profit school compared to IE (which main purpose is to make a profit to its shareholders)...
Okay, thank you!!
After ESSEC BBA (which is a good BBA but BBA is not great in France) you can easily make a move to ESSEC MSc or Grande Ecole, which will give you interviews in London.
grande ecole no way aha
BOIB has no idea, as usual, PEOPLE, DO NOT BELIEVE THIS KID. He doesnt know anything.
stop posting everywhere and trying to defend the impossible. I repeat over 15k a year for a bachelor is theft
You are the one spilling BS all over this board as if you were very knowledgeable on the subject.
You sound like you went to Warwick and have an inferiority complex since you were not admitted to LSE or others….therefore you have the urge to put other schools down to make you feel better…..
I will say it again…as an American, you can spend $60k in Tuition at Terrible Private Universities and upwards of $40k for out of state tuition at TERRIBLE State Public Universities….$15k for a Bachelor through an American’s eyes is nothing……heck most of us who send our kids to private schools in the US are already spending $20k+….
we are talking about Europe here. Why talk about the US. It is comparing apples with pears...
I went through this programme more years ago than I care to admit. I then got into a top 3 global business school for my masters abroad. I ended up at a tier 1 US BB for a few years, and have since been working in investment funds (PE, private debt).
Lots of fake news here. The ESSEC BBA is highly selective (at least for French students - can't comment about admissions for international students). Students are on average as switched on as the grande école ones, but tend to have a slightly different outlook on/ way of going through life. They tend to generally be more open-minded, entrepreneurial and internationally focused than grande école students. Overall, one can say they are a bit less "franco-French". A big share of my classmates had joined the programme despite having been admitted to top prepas (that was my case for example). Many ended up in top masters programmes abroad (LBS, LSE, Stanford, INSEAD...). Some French grande école students end up somewhat bitter when they realise they have followed "The Path" that everyone told them to follow from kindergarten, and are in the end starting their studies at an inferior finish line than people who do a top French bachelors + a masters somewhere else (and better).
The big caveat to this is that, yes, some large French companies in France continue to have an institutional bias against non-grande école profiles. I have certainly been interrogated in depth in interviews in France on why I hadn't gone to HEC or stayed at ESSEC for my masters, despite having graduated with a masters from a better school abroad. But if you're not planning to stay in France, and are not looking to impress old-school French HR managers in Levallois-Perret or Issy-les-Moulineaux, then this is not an issue at all.
