Five Types Of People Who Will Fail In Finance

There are certain types of people who will fail in the business world. While many of these types of people will not get through the hiring process, I'm sure you all have plenty of examples of coworkers who have had strange personality disorders that affected their performance. These people may have the intelligence required to do the job, but they have other issues that will cause them to fail. Here is my list, feel free to add anything I may have missed:

The Over-Seller
This person is the worst when you have to interact with clients. Imagine you are selling an idea, product, etc to a client or group of clients and you have them sold......but this person won't stop talking. Many times you will have a client need some time to consider their interest in a product or idea, but this over-seller is calling them several times a day to continuously attempt to sell them on it. Coming on too strong can creep out a client just like it can creep out a girl at the bar. On that topic, do not let this person be a wingman for you because he will still be telling the girl how awesome you are while she has her tongue down your throat.

The Procrastinator
In college it's OK if you want to smoke then go watch Harold and Kumar with your buddies instead of get your paper/problem set done. You are smart enough to get it done right before class and you are paying the school so if you don't do your work the only person it affects is you. In the workplace if you don't get your work done it can affect your superiors, your colleagues, and even those working under you. When you procrastinate you do just enough to get it done. You need to put in extra effort and extra work to achieve a successful career.

The Zombie
My friend calls this type of person the Zombie. They walk around their workplace or college campus with their head down looking at the floor. They are always quiet. The positives are that they also exceptionally smart and accomplish a great deal of work, but they are a total pushover. They never voice an opinion, never state an interesting idea or question, and you would never know they are there in the room with you. It may be a social skills problem, it may be that this person is super-shy, but it won't work for them long term.

The Overly-Pushy Person
This person knows that they are smart. In HS/College they minimized other people's roles in their group project/presentations in order to do as much work by themselves as possible. They don't trust anyone else to accomplish tasks so they are always looking over people's shoulders, poking into other people's business, and just generally annoying. They always want to have the last word in a discussion/meeting and always make sure to say everything they want to say. While a bit of "pushyness" is required so you don't become a doormat, this person goes too far.

The F**kup
This person always f**ks up. They are nice, carry themselves well, and are not annoying in any way. A lot of the time you like this person, but they are just a bit naive and for some reason always make mistakes. You could even say they are unlucky. Maybe they are a bit apathetic, but for whatever reason it is you can't continuously make small mistakes and expect to be successful.

This sounds like someone who will fail at anything in life, what a general list.

Baby you're the perfect shape, baby you're the perfect weight. Treat me like my birthday, I want it this way and I want it that way. It makes a man feel good baby.

There is only one type of person who fails, those who quit. If you think the heights of Wall Street or anywhere else is full of people who don't fuck up, who don't over sell and who go the extra mile you are delusional. One only has to look at any number of failed banks, investments, money managers and companies to see retards running things everywhere.

Have an internal control of yourself and keep plugging away. Those who can't do this blow up, quit, have an emotional break down, or flame out.

Funny you say this, I have "NO QUIT OPTION" written on the door and see it every time I come or go. The people here are as ridiculous and diverse as anywhere, but the ones who make the effort over time get somewhere. The rest don't matter.

Very well said.

Being at the age where I can see big difference in my friends from college and MSc I can guaranty you this list is a total garbage - One of my friend is super successful and roughly make half a million (@29 years old) and he has a very singular approach to his job/life. He is not "driven", doesn't aim to be "super performant" or even liked by his colleagues and clients. Works a lot less than everyone I know but still he is so freaking respected and liked by the partners at his HF...

On the other hand I have seen friends/ people from school who were poised to be the "New Stars" of WS and despite being so freaking "outstanding" (and "annoying") a grand majority of them are really not meeting the expectations...

I used to be so "sure" of what is wrong and right back in my 20's - after being burned HARD, my approach has changed and I am back to my "pre-WS normal" - a simple guy, average smart, but at least liked by my clients/ coworkers.

Back to the nerd / zombie guy I have met a lot of guys like this and if there was one "constant" reality is that they ARE everywhere and at every level - not all Partners are like Bill Ackman...
