BTW: I spoke each answer to their questions aloud before reading further. I didn't make a mistake when speaking, but the initial thought pattern was similar to what they describe (however, I then double-checked the answers before speaking, realized my errors, and corrected them before I spoke the answer out loud - all in the matter of a second).
My question is this: do you find this happening to you? Do you agree with it? Do you think it would be good for Olaf to read this? ;)

Ran this by some friends when I saw it. None of us missed the questions.
That people would answer these questions incorrectly implies to me that they have been "trained" to perform computations, but did not stop to actually consider the problem beyond the numbers involved. My guess is that this tendency is found in people with middle-of-the-road-high SAT scores (2100-2200). (The only reason I mention SAT scores is because the research uses it as a proxy for measuring 'smartness').
I wouldn't find it unexpected that people who have this "shortcut" tendency score fairly high on the SAT, since for the most part, the math section is largely manipulating numbers without any concern for what they represent.
