JDOasis.com Goes Live!

"Lawyers are like nuclear warheads. They have theirs, so I have mine. Once you use them, they fuck everything up." - Lawrence Garfield

WSO is the leading Internet community for finance professionals for one reason and one reason only: you. You guys have made this place what it is, and it's nothing short of amazing what has been accomplished in five short years. None of this would have worked if there wasn't the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie that exists here. We have a pretty good time with it most days, too.

About a year ago, Patrick got a crazy idea that a community like this might work for legal professionals as well, and JDOasis.com was born. It took a lot to put together, but the site officially launched a few hours ago.

If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, head on over there and take a look by clicking on the log and drop in a comment or two to help out:

Everything works much the same as WSO. If you're a lawyer, thinking about a law degree, or just have something of substance to share on a given subject, take a minute to register and join the conversation. After all, that's what got the ball rolling five years ago here at WSO.

Also, get the word out to any friends and family members pursuing the legal profession or actively practicing. There are a lot more lawyers than investment bankers out there, so they should build up a nice community relatively quickly. We truly appreciate your spreading the word, and you'll definitely be helping your lawyer buddies out.

Just a housekeeping note: I personally had nothing to do with the creation of the site, as the extent of my legal experience is limited to the truly surprising (even to me) number of times I've been sued and the considerably fewer (though still not insignificant) number of times I've been forced to answer to, "Will the defendant please rise."

That said, there's ample opportunity for a young legal eagle to become the next Braverman if they feel like they have the experience and the writing chops. JDOasis uses the same blog platform we do, so anyone with something to say can build a following from the ground floor of the site. Something for your friends to think about. Easier to get into than the Harvard Law Review, anyway.

Again, guys, thanks for spreading the word about the new site. Chances are you'll end up working with members of their community at some point (hopefully not in a criminal capacity, but shit happens) as that's the nature of our business. Let's help 'em get a big start to build the kind of community we enjoy so much here on WSO.

Should've used vBulletin for jdOasis, but with a similar theme... vB scales much more nicely than this Drupal thing you guys got going on. It would be impossible to migrate WSO to vB (or at least expensive and time consuming) but if you're starting jdOasis from scratch might as well do it right!

Wall Street leaders now understand that they made a mistake, one born of their innocent and trusting nature. They trusted ordinary Americans to behave more responsibly than they themselves ever would, and these ordinary Americans betrayed their trust.

vBulletin works just for forums. The advantage with Drupal is that other features can be added, such as the jobs, compensation, models, guides, and services sections of the site.

I do think a different color scheme would have been interesting for JD Oasis.

The latest vB version allows you to add other features. It's actually easier to program plug-ins and add-ons for vB than for Drupal. The jobs, comps, models, guides, etc etc could all be easily added to a vB installation, and it has a lot of very powerful features... there are literally thousands of customization options (which, admittedly, makes it hard to get used to at first).

I'm not a vB salesman or anything, but I have used both Drupal and vB in the past. I built a pretty big community for a non-profit organization back in high school, and have built some private networks for different orgs more recently using vB.

As a general rule of thumb - for a forum with additional features (such as this one) vB is better. for a website with a community as a 'social layer', Drupal is better than vB (although everything Drupal does, ExpressionEngine does better, so use that).

Happy, I'm on top the SB Board, which is all that matters... although being Nr. 1 in Shit Thrown at you is not a bad deal either.

Er.... I take the Shit Comment back... I think we've found our first stupid poster of JDO.

Hey guys, thanks for your support so far - please help spread the word and drop a comment in where you can. We allow anonymous monkeys to post too. So while I'd prefer if you registered, any activity right now is good activity since it's a "baby community."

thanks, Patrick

Beef -- too late now - plus we utilized the entire theme layer, custom modules (userpoints module), etc. which were used by WSO so I felt like it made sense to just build it in the same platform given that WSO is working well.

If it was from scratch no doubt you're right, but might as well leverage what we have and make it better as we go along like we've been doing. All my dev guys are Drupal guys, my assistant knows Drupal, I know Drupal, etc... I honestly don't have the time to find new developers or try to explain what I'm looking for. When I say to my developers, do it like WSO, they get it -- and anyone who is not a developer and has worked with developers knows that clear communication is critical when building a new site out.

Great site guys. Is it possible to adjust the color scheme a tiny bit just so I know I'm not on WSO? I mean it's not a big deal but when I had both WSO and JDO open I got lost for a little bit.

Just signed up. As a side note...

Patrick, you should set up a little mixer between WSO and JDO...maybe some of us finance guys can find us a nice lady of the law...or you could add a new singles section, lol.

As anyone here ever dated a lawyer? How was the experience?

Regards

Haha, maybe a bit. I was just curious because most attorneys I know are guys, but I met a few ladies the other night (they weren't bad looking, but married) and it made me wonder what their personalities are typically like.

Plus I need some variety, lol.

I don't even want to begin to imagine what heinous pictures she's going to get because of this.

Patrick,

You opened up the floodgates from hell. Liz, if you're reading this, please post all the absolutely hysterical pictures you get sent... Everyone could use a good laugh or two.
