Tebow to the Jets; Saints Gutted

Well, yesterday was certainly one for the books in the NFL. I'm still in shock. I realize this isn't Wall Street related, but we have so many football fans on WSO that I wanted to get your take on the whole thing.

First of all, Tim Tebow is now a New York Jet. I can only wonder what's going through Mark Sanchez's head right now. If you're Rex Ryan, what's the thinking in bringing Tebow to New York? If you're going for the drama of a quarterback controversy, that's one thing. But I'm struggling to see how it makes the Jets better. Maybe some of you die hard Jets fans can enlighten me.

The other big news yesterday was that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell gutted the New Orleans Saints in an unprecedented punishment for a defensive bounty system suspected of causing intentional injuries to opposing players. Super Bowl Champion head coach Sean Payton has been suspended without pay for the entire season, as well as several other severe sanctions. The hope that the Saints would be the first team in NFL history to enjoy home field advantage in next year's Super Bowl has been all but snuffed out.

Of course I'm devastated. Saints football is a huge part of my fall season every year. I'm supposed to take over as commissioner of my fantasy league next season and now I'm having a hard time seeing the point in even playing. I get that the sanctions needed to send a message and that intentionally injuring other players is bad. But c'mon.

I started playing organized tackle football at eight years old and my first position was a tackle on the defensive line. Our coaches had a bounty system set up for us back then at eight years old, for crying out loud. If I managed to put a quarterback out of a game, that meant I didn't have to run laps the whole next week, or that I could go for a ride in the coach's tricked out '70s conversion van (okay, looking back that particular incentive was probably a little creepier than it needed to be).

My point is that defensive bounties happen at all levels of the game and on every team. Where the Saints really screwed up was in being so blatant about it and then trying to cover it up. One of the coach's kept a spreadsheet, for chrissakes. (that particular coach, Gregg Williams - now with the Rams - has been suspended indefinitely by the league).

Obviously I could go on and on about the Saints. I'm shocked and disappointed, and I can't help but wonder about how much softer they're gonna make the game of football. However, I do understand that intentionally injuring another player isn't cool and can't be left unchecked, so while I'm not happy about the sanctions I do understand them.

But let's get back to Tebow. Is he just a bargaining chip for Ryan? Is he going to turn into a Samsonite player, moving from team to team every year because no one can find a place for him? Is he going to ride the pine behind Sanchez this season? Because that would be a pretty bitter pill to swallow for a quarterback that ostensibly took his no-name team to the playoffs last season.

I thought plugging him into Jacksonville or even Miami made sense on a lot of levels. I can honestly say I can't figure out the Jets move. Help me out here guys.

I'm sure that this had no possibility of occurring, but I would've loved seeing Tebow go to to the Pats. Imagine Tebow in the slotback running the option with Wes Welker. Fucking Badass

This. Because no NFL defense could possibly watch game film and prepare to snuff out the option attack. Also probably the reason so many teams rely heavily on this complex offensive package.

Who you calling a psycho?!?!

I know I won't be drafting any Jets RB's this year (although I tell myself this every single year), regardless of who starts at QB. Sanchez with no right arm and Tebow with no left.

True, Goodell has unfortunately made the sport softer, and I disagree with most of his hit fines, but Payton's one year suspension was legitimate and refreshing.

As for Tebow, I don't think he really adds anything to the Jets. Not sure what the rationale was there. He's going to get passed around for a while.

Yah. I have a serious feeling he is going to be traded again... the guys a winner and has too large a fanbase to have him rot on the bench...

Get it!

I don't think he's likely to 'rot on the bench' but rather be used as a change of pace QB in running and option plays a la Brad Smith before. I actually think this might be a decent role for him as he will NEVER be a starter but isn't fit for a full time back up. This is sort of what he was built for. I hope the JETS use him wisely.

Tebow mania is over. Timothy Tebow does not have NFL QB skills...I'm not hating on the guy but he can't do the ONE thing all NFL QBs must do, which is throw. I know all the bullshit about how he overcame the odds in Denver but he really wasn't that great, he had a few spectacular plays, but for the most part he was pretty bad. I think it's time for him to change positions or ride the bench.

Think he could make a nice slot, receiving TE/red-zone fullback.
Do you have to be on the roster to be the official team chaplain?

Brees isn't signed to a contract yet. He could skip outa town if he wanted but I doubt he will. I think he is franchised though.

He is franchised, but I'm thinking the Saints might let him go. It's a shame. The GM Mickey Loomis is also suspended for 6 or 8 games, so he's not going to be able to make any personnel decisions. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Saints let Brees walk, which is something neither of them wants to see happen. But if Benson (the owner) has to pay Brees top-5 money for a year that will likely go nowhere and then have to negotiate a long term deal following a disastrous season, I just can't see him doing it.

Benson is the weakest link in the chain, IMO. He is more concerned about his Merc dealerships

Edit: doesn't a franchise tag bring certain contract stipulations to it? Is there a no cut clause or a guaranteed salary in that case?

Saints are fucked. Jets are in the same position they were last year other than they have a Tebow fans now behind them. The NFL is still the no fun league granted Payton needed to be suspended(a year is way to long) he let that fuckery go on OPENLY under his watch....no way.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Jets will be drama city, and the saints are going back to being weak. Broncos to AFC Championship?
