Wall Street Doomsday Prep

Yesterday I was floating around the internet doing some light research on the H&K MR556 and MR762, during which time I stumbled upon a doomsday prepper forum. I lurked for a while. In fact, I lurked far longer than I had originally planned. Some are prepping for your Sandy or Katrina situation; others are planning for the more hardcore scenario found in the script of Jericho. One thing I learned about the latter: these people are serious.

On the topic of food collection, one user boasts his (6) 55 gallon barrels along with a 300 gallon tank all full of tap water, along with a (6) 55 gallon barrel rain collection system. Over in the firearm section, another user stated he had spent $20,000 in the two months prior to his post on firearms and ammunition. His cache included 25,000 rounds of .22LR along with impressive quantities of other calibers of ammo with the corresponding firearms to shoot them with. This just scratches the surface. Some of these people are living their lives based on the belief that the end of the world is not only inevitable (of course it is), but that it will happen within their lifetime (unlikely).

One thing is for certain though; they will not share their resources during said doomsday scenario. I know this because I read their discussion on the topic. I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t share either (During the end of the world that is, I would however share in a natural disaster situation where there is a light at the end of the tunnel). They’re investing their time and money for their family’s survival, and they won't share with people like us. This brings me to the reason for this post.

They’re all retarded. Of course I’m generalizing and being a little aggressive with my word choice, but by reading their posts it is absolutely clear they’re all uneducated rednecks. It would be fair to say they are the polar opposite demographic of this community. So I thought I’d bring it up here. This way I can still read a discussion about doomsday prepping without getting chronically annoyed with everyone's consistent use of “there” for “their” and “they’re”.

In all seriousness, I’m a proud owner of firearms and I think it is a good idea to have food and supplies to remain self-sufficient in the event of a disaster. That about sums up my doomsday prepping. How are you prepared? What will you do during a SHTF (Shit Hits The Fan – learned it yesterday) scenario?

Considering that I live in NYC, and given contemporary wisdom/thinking/media portrayals/politics/terrorist agendas, I'll probably among the first to go. I mean shit, even in a Marvel comic books movie it was NYC that caught all the heat. I wish it was the 90's; it was always LA that got blown up back then.

in it 2 win it

I think you may be looking at a subset.

I have actual military issue gasmasks, food, a backup location out in the boonies available, etc etc etc etc etc in the even of a catastrophe and have lived through a couple. That and my grandparents came out of a concentration camp, and then every generation has been heavily involved in either/or military/politics. Shit can get reallllllll ugly, it's good to have a backup plan JIK

I'm perhaps a bit biased on my outlook, but hey, whatever.

Probably is a subset. After all, these people are invested enough to frequent the forums. Some of the stuff is pretty interesting though.

When a plumber from Hoboken tells you he has a good feeling about a reverse iron condor spread on the Japanese Yen, you really have no choice. If you don’t do it to him, somebody else surely will. -Eddie B.

Yeah, they look at life completely differently, especially the ones who grew up around it. Even if you're not going hardcore, having some means to defend yourself and some food stashed away is just a good idea even if you aren't paranoid.

I do see what you were saying, some of the folks in the militias are convinced the gov't is coming for them some day. With their disconnect from reality and running small armies LOL I can't imagine why the gov't would have a problem with them. And yeah, you're right that there's a substantial amount of people who are just retarded.

I like to think that I'd be prepared for some black swan event, but as far as the gov't going all Nazi Germany, it's not like that kind of thing isn't incredibly obvious and I'd leave the country well before things got out of hand.

I think that it always good to have some preps ready. Even the government recommends two weeks of food and clean water, so that should be a minimum. Maybe some meds and a firearm (if you don't live in NYC), and you should be in good shape. Probably better than 90% of the population.

Please don't quote Patrick Bateman.
