Warren Buffett: Time Magazine’s Man of the Year?

This could turn into a shitshow, but what the hell; let’s see how it goes anyway. Time magazine has rolled out their candidates for Person of the Year and among the more obvious contenders like the 99%, the 1%, Steve Jobs, SEAL Team 6 (hellz yeah), as well as the Arab Youth Protesters, who do we find rounding up the top ten? Señor Warren Buffett.

What do you think monkeys? Should Buffett be 2011’s Person of the Year? Is the greatest investor alive worthy of such a title? If not, who do you think it should go to instead?

It’s interesting how he got there though; it wasn’t the guilt-trip giving pledge nor his various other charities, and neither was it his book-talking investing savvy either, rather, it’s his never-ending battle against low taxes that gave him the nod:

“…he could be nominated for Person of the Year 2011 for his high-profile support of the so-called Buffett tax, the idea that the effective tax rates of the extremely wealthy should not be lower than those of their mostly middle-class employees, sending a message that socially responsible billionaires must remember the 99%.”

Personally, I don’t think Buffett stands a chance here. Sure, I’m not a fan of the guy but compared to SEAL Team 6, the 99%, and Anonymous, no one can argue that the Oracle of Omaha will be found lacking this time around. Come to think of it, ever.

What say you guys? Think ol’ Warren has a shot at this?

I'm going with the 99% on this one. We may not agree with them but man did they own 2011.

Here’s the current top ten:

#10 Warren Buffett

#9 Gabrielle Giffords

#8 SEAL Team 6

#7 The Fukushima 50

#6 Barack Obama

#5 Steve Jobs

#4 The Arab Youth Protesters

#3 Lionel Messi

#2 Anonymous

#1 the 99%

Slightly bummed the 1% didn’t make it. Well, at least they’re higher up the ranks than Kim K. Heh.

Have a good one WSO.

Dude Steve Jobs locked this one up for sure

LOL at the 99% winning. The news barely give them any coverage these days.

To be honest I'm surprised Chancellor Merkel is not part of this list. She's literally carrying europe i on her shoulders knowing that her political career is going to be over if things actually end up working, european crisis is averted and German tax payers are sent the bill.

The more I look at this list the more I think is a joke.

I had to look up #3.

Jobs and the SEALs should be higher.

Gabrielle Giffords? She was shot, sad, but what did she really do?

I actually think Warren should be higher, but definitely not #1.

The 99% is utterly retarded.

Reality hits you hard, bro...

You don't watch soccer...World Cup?

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

If you watched the world cup you would still have to look Messi up lol.

I can't get my head around the fact that Obama is in that list. Seal 6 or Fukushima's 50 for me. Jobs was a great man, but he didn't do shit in 2011 besides die, and the prize is Man of THE YEAR.

No Gaddafi? No Merkel (excellent point by Unforseen)?

Though I'm a fan of some of Buffett's exploits (though certainly not his proposed poicy changes), I would have the same problem with him winning this year as I had with Zuck winning last year. That is, WB has perhaps accomplished more than anyone else on the list, but his career spans several decades. Just because he's now being mentioned in the conversation of hippies and proles doesn't mean this was the peak of his career, indeed it could be argued that a lot of his best plays are far in the past (why didn't he win any of those years?). If Buffett is to ever win the award (in the future) it should either be the year he retires or the year he dies.

Therefore, the fundamental question you have to ask yourself is: "Is the person of the year award recognition for a person's impact within the span of the given year? or a lifetime achievement award for someone that finally crosses a certain threshold?"

I personally believe it should only be the latter when the reason for that person's recognition definitively ends in that year, in all other cases it should be the former. My top choices are:

-The Arab Youth -SEAL team 6 -Steve Jobs (though his accomplishments certainly span several years, sadly 2011 marked a definitive end of his timeline)

“Millionaires don't use astrology, billionaires do”

Arab Spring Youth or Seal Team Six. I did not think there would be such a sweeping series of uprisings like we have seen. There simply was no substantive opposition. It really speaks to the changes in the world caused by social media. Seal Team Six would be second.

I'm sick and tired of "Person" of the year going to multiple people. Time magazine needs to brush up on its fucking grammar. Just call it people of the year, since they always do this anyway.

My opinion does matter, too. I was Person of the Year 2006.

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Jobs will get it because that will sell copies.

If Person of the Year includes groups of people my nomination is "7 billion". I don't know about you guys but I'm kind of a big thing around this universe if you haven't heard.

txjustin:
Yay, nominate him (in liberal voice).

What does that sound like?

"For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry God. Bloody Mary full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now and at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon. Amen."

I love Messi, but I don't think he's done enough this year to be the Man of the Year. Why the fuck is Barack Obama on there?

I'd say Steve Jobs or SEAL Team 6.

SEAL Team 6 just did their job. Not man of the year type stuff if its considered a Tuesday for you and I am sure they would agree.

The criteria is who impacted the news most, for better or worse.

Worldwide, I don't see how it can't be them, but since "person of the year" is ambiguous people just vote for whatever they think that means.

Are you serious? They impacted the news the most by shooting Osama in the face? How about Gaddaffi? We heard about Osama catching a bullet with his face for a week or two but the Libya thing was on going for months. What about the other Arab spring type activity? This SEAL Team worship is pathetic.

While Warren Buffet has been extremely popular, I would have to say that my vote would have to be for Seal Team Six. I mean, they are the greatest heroes of our lifetime and will go down in history.
