What Would You Do if You Lost One (Or More) of Your Senses?
Last weekend I had a brief exchange with my girlfriend that I would probably break up with her if she lost one of her major senses (sight was the topic of discussion, and “major” meaning what I deemed more important than the others. Feel free to prioritize as you see fit.) She understandably took great offense to this but it got me thinking, what would you do if this ill-fated horror became a reality?
There’s been plenty of discussion here on WSO about life outside of banking and PE but this can be taken with a grain of salt given we’re all in the same chase for financial freedom and success. People are involved in accidents every day, many of which left with what most of us perceive as a debilitating handicap that we cannot imagine life in such a state. It is said by many that if you lose one sense, the rest tend to heighten beyond your fellow brethren, but could that possibly make up for the loss?
I’m no philosopher by any stretch of the imagination but I would like to think that I do have a very supportive cast of family and friends that would do more than they need to in order to make sure I can still live a prosperous life. Many people aren't so lucky. Of course this is also dependent on which sense(s) we’re talking about so let’s use my original example of losing sight.
This might be one of my biggest fears because I have a notion that I could get by ok if I lost every sense but sight. If I can see something, I can react to it. Sure there’s a huge grey area here but in my line of work, I could probably still get by ok. What about you? Hearing might be the next in line as most important since meetings and phone calls aren't transcribed for the hearing impaired in my day-to-day (though there are a TON of workarounds here like this example using Google Glass - Link to Google Glass for hearing impaired). Smell, I could probably do without because cities (and many people) don’t smell all that great anyways. Touch is a tough one but aside from intimate contact or fear of hurting yourself and not knowing it, might not be a deal breaker for me either. Taste is another wonderful sense for that first bite of a quality steak, but if you can live without it, you might actually be able to eat a more healthy and balanced diet since you can include foods you otherwise did not previously enjoy.
So what you do you guys think? Could you still do your job if you lost some of your senses? What kind of careers could you transition to if this became a reality that might be advantageous? It’s all about perspective and this might help some of those on here in seeing the bigger picture in life and true pursuit of happiness, albeit through a very different lens.
I guess we have a different sense of humor than some people on here. The point of the post was to see if people had any experience with this and if you think you could still competently perform your job if something terrible like this happened to you. No hard feelings here people.
yeah bro do you expect a pat on the back when you tell her you would leave her if shes in trouble?
Funniest post I have ever seen since recently discovering this forum you sir get the first SB ever from yours truly.
To answer your question Sight/Hearing would really be the only "game over" ones. In terms of work sight would be most important for presentations/work now if we're talking about life in general hearing would be the worst to lose.
Hope you're spinning plates.
Wallstreetplayboys, so you would rather be BLIND than DEAF in life? That seems unbelievable. I think sight would be the worst to lose, and I actually had a similar talk with my girlfriend last weekend, but it was if she became paralyzed.
Translation: Last weekend my girlfriend was being manipulative and tried to ascertain if she was in my long term plans. I was duped. "Through sickness and health be damned... unless you were like at least 2pts out of ten hotter on the 1-10 scale." She got mad. I will soon be masturbating more than I was accustomed to.

Yep would rather be blind in real life. Having worked in some hospitals in the past the functioning without sight versus hearing is baffling. We actually rely on hearing for many many survival tasks.
You can always pull a Ray Charles to avoid dating a fatty too, ha. This post is just too funny and Cookies is spot on as well. "Duped into a do you REALLY luvvvv meeee?" conversaiton.
