H1-B Lottery - Any international monkeys?
So any international monkeys screwed by the H1-B Lottery? Unfortunately it seems I didn't get picked so will be heading home in the summer
Unbelievable you work your ass off for 2 yrs to get a gig and then your fate is decided by a random lottery with no sense of merit
Any others have had an experience with H1-B over the years?
Share your experiences (or of people you know) What was your plan B if it didn't work out!
That sucks :\
It happened to a friend of mine - he got a job at CS in NY but got screwed by the lottery. He just moved to the CS London though.
^lucky him
seems like I wont be getting that option
and its not like a London Visa is a guarantee
He has an EU citizenship so I think there are no big barriers (if any) in that case for a UK work permit. Not 100% sure though.
its just very depressing
i had plans to change my fortunes and worked so hard after literally being nowhere in the spring of my junior yr
the disappointment will be hard to overcome
It's such a ridiculous process, teams losing ppl left and right
I can imagine that is very disappointing. I have some friends who are going through that right now. Large financial services firms are usually willing to transfer people to an office abroad. After a full year, you can come back to the US on L-Visa, or just stay there. Have you explored that option with your firm (assuming they have a global presence)?
the london office is small-ish but what sucks for me is that they dont have the same group there.
looks like i will be heading home in the summer but theres a good chance i might be end of a job end of the month period. they'll let us know in a few days
I know two guys from a non-target that both didn't get it.. which I know everyone works hard to get the job, but just... damn... its like, so close but so far. Always thought there had to be a better system out there than the lottery...
Still waiting here..and yes, the system is totally retarded and makes you jump through hoops. You have to play the game though.
Backup is a masters in Europe, hopefully I don't have to resort to that.
still good luck though! we need it!
My company didn't do the premium processing so I've no idea when I'll hear from USCIS..but yeah it starts getting real when people you know are getting whacked as well.
^
*regular
not premium
so just received official confirmation that I didn't get it
Really sorry to hear your story. I'm just a bit confused why you insist on having a H1-b Visa and not using your OPT (assuming you haven't used it already)
OPT is only valid for 1 yr (unless you are in a STEM field wherein it is 2.5 years
Didn't read the entire thread, but you should be good to come back/transfer to an L-1 Visa?
Haha yeah man, I have not heard back from them yet so I assumed I did not get selected this year. From China originally, came here for undergrad and broke into REPE right out of school, so maybe Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, London.
Such a ridiculous process. In london it is much better organized. Firms get a certain number of sponsorship pemits from Government each year, and can use them as they see fit. So basically if a firm wants you, and uses one of its permits for you, except if you have some issue in your application you are almost guaranteed to get it. So in they case there are too many international applicants, it's the firm that decides who to use its permits for, and allows you to plan much better in case they tell you they are not willing to do so instead of waiting for some shitty lottery
can fellow monkeys have the kindness to explain to me the H1B lottery, i'm enrolling next year in a US university
65,000 slots, too many applicants (this year we have 233,000) --> lottery to see who's lucky enough to stay.
Source: just got screwed.
To anyone who knows about the process: once you are in an international office, can your firm sponsor you for H-1B again or is L-1 the only way to go back after a year? The only annoying thing with L-1 is that you may not leave your employer for a certain time if what I heard is correct.
I believe the answer is yes and they don't have to wait a certain period of time before they can sponsor you.
the h1b process happens every april so the firm will have to wait atleast a year to sponsor you again
so might awell go back on L1 as its guaranteed
Would like to bump this with an update on actions and timeline (as it may answer someone's questions some day): No H1B in 2015 -> Bank transferred me to London office -> Contacted NYC team in Jan 2016 and they said they would take me back -> Lawyers engaged early Feb -> Lottery again April 2016 -> Got good news on Apr 15th -> Transferring back in early October 2016 (H1B becomes effective Oct 1st)
Congrats!
Are you a EU citizen?
Nope I'm from Asia
Congrats and many thanks for sharing!
Bullshit system.
OP what degree did you just finish?
What happens if I don't get my H1-B (Originally Posted: 03/03/2009)
So I have a FT offer in IBD M&A starting this July. But I am an international student and I'm worried about not getting my H1-B work visa in the 2nd year.
I was wondering if anyone knew what the protocol was for dealing with these kinds of cases at banks? Is it too hopeful to assume that they'll transfer me over to an international office if I don't get the work visa here in the U.S?
Thanks
A friend of mine didn't get his H-1B and they transferred him over to their Amsterdam office - he worked for Ernst & Young though, not in Banking. But you could check with them before hand to be sure, there are ways around this issue.
I think this was discussed in a thread before. The general consensus was that you either get transferred to an international office or you're laid off. Some banks are more conducive to transferring you while some aren't.
internationally focused firms = transfer
us focused firm = boot
it's not necessarily true that a US-based firm will give you a boot... i know that JPM has been very good in the past about relocating you. pre-crisis, C was also very committed to relocating individuals, although they did admit that people sometimes quit because they did not like the location to where they were sent
also keep in mind new regulation for TARP recipients with respect to hiring H-1Bs... that could be the last thing that makes some banks not hire any more internationals
you have 12-29 months of OPT right? But would it be void once you applied H1B?
Then you go back to being a chai walla and you keep looking for Latika.
IBD M&A, good stuff. Keep your fingers crossed.
you-down-with-the-sec, you're correct. thanks for point that out.
your OPT is not voided if you apply for h-1b.
I've friends whose offers were rescinded last summer (also they were told that they couldn't be relocated b/c headcount issue). Also intl are more likely to be cut during headcount reduction - but that certainly depends on the bank and the specific groups.
I second lucyzzz's comment, went thru that myself.
I got my H-1B in October 2008. I work at a smaller firm so they were willing to work with me had any difficulties arisen, you should consider the option.
Chances of h1-b for internationals (Originally Posted: 04/28/2013)
Hello all, I have questions regarding recruitment at Kelley, due to my status as an international student. I would like to work in the U.S in the future, upon graduation, however I do realize that as a non-US citizen, my work Visa has to be sponsored by companies, hence this may make me an unappealing candidate. Hence, I have my concerns about coming to Kelley, as to whether it will enable me to achieve my ambition. Do international students often get job offers upon graduation? Also if i get into the IB workshop, is it a guarantee that i will get a job offer, even as an intl student?
thanks!
Smaller firms with less resources might refrain from hiring you, but all the big banks hire international students for their front office, mid office and tech divisions. Tech divisions are filled with people on H1-Bs.
I would most probably be pursuing a degree in finance and/or accounting, therefore the tech divisions may not be that applicable to me. I'm more concerned about whether Kelley has a standing in Chicago or wall street to be able to place me in one of these large banks/firms.
if you are really set on staying in the US, then in worst case the big4 will always sponsor h1bs. maybe worth considering as a back up at least.
thanks, but what do you mean by the big 4 being a back up? the big four as opposed to?
I assume you are mainly interested in IB etc so then I think big4 would be considered a back up given that the recruiting is less competitive. All I was trying to say was that if you really want to stay in the US and cant get an IB to sponsor you, then it might be worth looking into the big4 since it is easier to get those jobs and they still sponsor h1bs.
Oh alright, i get the picture now. However in the US, is the big 4 considered as inferior to other IBs?
Just sneak into the U.S. and wait for them to legalize all the illegal immigrants (that's the bill before Congress now). Why even obey the immigration laws when you are penalized for trying?
you need to know though, because it take more resources to hire an international student, the competition would be even more fierce. I think you can actually contact the banks or go to their websites to see their sponsorship policies?
I guess what I'm asking essentially is whether Kelley will put me in a strong position to get these banks to sponsor me, in terms of name prestige etc. As for the academics I will definitely work hard, to make sure that I am able to get into the IB workshop, however in the case that do not, where would that place me as an international from Kelley? Would the banks still hire from Kelley as compared to ivies?
I am actually in the similar situation as you are. I will be attending Northwestern and will be following the Kellogg CPU track.
So you've decided to attend northwestern? Mind sharing what motivated your decision to study in the states despite the high school fees? Need a push in the right direction,
I like the American liberal arts education and its idea of "well-rounded human being." Also, I definitely think Kellogg will provide more opportunities than schools outside the US. hbu?
Well, i'm still really very lost regarding my decision, and i have 2 days left to decide. Im particularly concerned due to Indiana university's brand name as a whole. I know that Kelley is a top program and is well ranked, however i'm sure that from where you come from (which is where btw?) i do not think people from your region may have heard of it, mainly due to the prestige and brand name factor of IU as a whole. Schools like Umich and maybe northwestern have good prestige as a school overall, so i wouldnt worry too much about that. It would be a different story if i were admitted into Ross,or stern imo. Regarding opportunities, if i want to get a job in the US, i believe that the degree that i will get from my local university would probably not get me there, unless i take up a master's program in the US eventually. However, i would think that it has a good reputation in the Asia region, so opportunities within Asia would still be possible, assuming a high GPA, good networking and extra curriculars. I'm just worried that this extra money would be for naught, and it could also be used elsewhere, because if i am unable to get a job upon graduation, returning to Singapore would not be ideal. Salary wise, i would be the same the graduates locally, just that i'd be a good 150k behind them (even though i'm not taking on a loan). Advancement opportunities wise....nobody can say for sure. Right now, i'm not sure as to whether attending Kelley and paying all that money is a gamble or a long term investment.
