How much weight is put on where you went to school in PE recruiting?

Landed a job at an EB in nyc (laz, evr, moelis) with the goal to make it into MF or UMM PE. Having gone to a non target school (state school), is that going to be a significant deterrent in getting into a top PE firm? How much weight is put on your undergrad, especially with an average GPA 3.7-3.8?

When you say groups within each EB, do you mean M&A vs Restructuring or industry sepcialization, so like Tech M&A vs Industrials M&A?

As Frisbee said, your group matters a lot more. I'm at MBB from a non-target state school, and when I went through PE recruiting I received interview invites at top MF's and UMM's (think Bain Cap, Berkshire, H&F, Advent, Golden Gate, NMC, etc.) Ultimately signed an offer with a fund in that tier. I even had a few interviewers say they were impressed I made it to MBB from my non-target, so if anything it may show them you have the hustle it takes to make it in PE. Good luck!
