Choosing between liberal art colleges
I’ve been accepted to a few elite mid west based lac : oberlin, macalester, Grinnell and Carleton. My dream college was either Williams or Amherst, but I was rejected by both. I’ve been offered a full-ride at all of the four Midwest colleges. Not sure if I want to do IB or Consulting after undergrad, but It’ll be one of the two; I’m still a high school senior so I have some time. Which colleges should I be looking at?
Keep in mind you probably wont stick the desire to be a banker in 3 or 4 years. Look at cultural fit as well as the general strength of the colleges.
I have done campus visits, and cultural fit does not seem to be a problem at either of the colleges. I am looking for some info on general strengths - all colleges seem to have produced outstanding / famous alumnus, which makes sense as they all feature within the top 30 in the country...furthermore, all these colleges are generally considered peers to each other. how should i be thinking about this?
Look at the QoF bro..
What does qof mean?
quality of females
Each place will have its own unique strengths. Rather than ask a bunch of strangers here perhaps you should consider the following if you have it already...
Which strengths matter to you more now? Which will matter more in 4 years? In 20 years? What about climate? Activities? Student population makeup? Culture? Sports? Social scene?
Maybe take a poll of your friends and family if you are really stuck. And if you are really stuck, after that, you may just have to take plunge and choose something or flip a coin or draw out of a hat. Welcome to adulthood...big decisions that may really impact your life are rarely crystal clear at the time. It doesn’t get better, I assure you.
Good Luck
Top 30 in the country? Maybe liberal arts but won’t see these in any general top 30 rankings
Go to Oberlin.
They have to pay a nearby bakery $44 million because the college has specialized in training communists who go around slandering and terrorizing the community. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oberlin-college-president-defamation-lawsu…
You'll know everything about social justice and nothing about reality.
Thanks, I dont know how I missed this, oberlin is out of the picture for me!
You are welcome. Good luck
These are all strong Elite colleges in the US. Since you’re considering a career in biz, I presume you’d want to study economics or maths. unless my understanding of your plans in wrong, Carleton and macalester would be better options for this.
Carleton or Macalaster hands down.
Just don't expect to have a solid football team...
Bobby Axe negotiating Taylor's salary: "This isn't heavy petting on the Oberlin campus, we don't both have to agree".
In all seriousness, avoid that place and any other extreme hippie place. 10 years ago, far left politics might've added unique perspective to your life. But these days its just a bunch of whining rich kids who aren't there to learn because they don't need any actual knowledge to do whatever bullshit job they plan on doing after graduating. They get what they came for (a piece of paper and 4 years of self-righteousness) and you're the one who's cheated out of thoughtful classmates who help you develop.
I attended a NESAC school. when I was interviewing for ib internships in the US a decade ago - as anecdotal as the data maybe - did see some kids from Carleton and macalester. I’ve never come across anyone from Grinnell or oberlin in the finance industry. I’m sure they exist, and things may have well changed by now recruitment-wise
Eliminate Grinnell and Oberlin. You could transfer from the other two to better schools for IB or ride it out and depend on a small but existent alumni base.
Macalester is in an urban area full of hot blondes so I think it’d be the most fun.
I frankly think transferring is a bad idea unless you are at a terrible uni. I say that because recruiting prospects aside, you dont get to form strong ties with student body at either of the two places
are recruiting odds for ib or consulting better at Midwest lac like these? No OCR but only a tiny fraction of folks are interested to begin with.
