Lateral PE Headhunters
Hi all,
I'm currently a first year Associate at a MM PE fund in the Midwest. My program is a 2-and-out and I'm looking to move back to NYC (did 3 years of IB there) at its conclusion.
I will be reaching out to the normal list of headhunters contained in this list but was wondering if there were other firms who specialize in lateral PE moves.
Please let me know if anyone has any recommendations.
Thanks!
What did you think of doing PE in midwest?
Mind listing the pros and cons?
I mean, it's completely firm specific. My firm is in the $500M - $1BN fund size range and has a pretty solid culture. Pay is lower, but deal flow is high and I get a lot of direct exposure with management which is what I was looking for. I think that's kind of the sweet spot for Midwest firms, but it's going to take a lot longer before you're making the big bucks.
Long story short: do a LOT of research on any fund you're thinking about moving to. Go on LinkedIn and call your mutual contacts for anyone that works at that firm. Always find out if you can get a real inside scoop before taking the leap. I'm expecting it to be much more difficult to get back to NYC, but this was my best option during recruiting.
Okay, thanks. Were you in Chicago, or other midwestern city?
And when you say will take a lot longer to make the big bucks -- do you mean you're currently making a lot less than you think you would if you were in same size firm in NY? Or that the partners there don't make the same money as NYC PE partners do?
And lastly... percentage wise, how much less do you think is the deficiency in pay there?
Thanks!
Bump curious as well
below is a list of "core" headhunters I use as well as a "non-core" list that is helpful for non-east coast / SF regions, as well as smaller funds. You'll likely see the best quality opportunities from the core list but the non-core list can be helpful as well - good to cast a wide net and low downside.
Core Amity Bellcast CPI Dynamics Glocap Gold Coast Henkel Odyssey Oxbridge Ratio SearchOne SG
Non-Core DHR Dore Partnership GAM Group JHB Long Ridge One Search Options Group Opus Pinpoint Robin Judson Partners Russel Tobin Selby Jennings Wilcox Berry
Do these HH's do post-MBA recruiting? IB -> PE -> MBA -> Or is that mainly handled by the MBA program?
Yes, ALL of the core and some of the non-core also do Post MBA recruiting.
Thanks man.
Thanks for the information, Quagmire. I'm in a bit of a quagmire myself... it okay if I DM you some time so I can ask your opinion based on your path and experiences?
sure
Sorry for the double post: would you be able to use the same HH's you used while in IB?
