Corporate Strategic Finance to Hedge Fund?
I'm a rising senior at a "semi-target" (non-business student at a school with a target undergrad business school but non-business recruits pretty well too) and incoming corporate strategic finance intern at a F50. I want to move back to my home city after college, and the city I live in has several hedge funds (between $1b and $17+b), so I want to explore the possibility of breaking in as a junior analyst/associate a couple years after I graduate. Assuming I get a return offer at my corporate job, do you think I would be decently well-positioned to exit to a junior analyst job at one of the many hedge funds in my (tier-2, think DC, Charlotte) city in a few years?
No
Hey, would you mind being a little more specific? What should I do within my first couple of years working to make myself a competitive applicant, and is the competition for junior-level hedge fund spots any less in non-tier 1 cities?
What is this "tier 2" city BS? Why are you so cagey? Are we CIA agents or what? Like we're going to know who you are if you tells us you're from SF or Miami or whatever..
Must be dallas. Where else is tier 2 and has $15bn+ funds?
Plus Texas people always wanna go back to Texas.
What would you be doing at that strategic finance role after graduation?
Get into banking. that’s your best bet for becoming a junior analyst a couple years down the line. you’re not doing any valuation work in your strategic Corp fin job are you?
If he were doing valuation work in that job would he still need to go into banking? i.e. say if the function was more aligned to corporate development work
honestly probably still yes to maximize his chances, but I wouldn’t say it would be an absolute prerequisite. still would want to make that move. it’s tough in general to break in period so it’s just helping your odds
Corporate to sellside ER to buyside is much more plausible.
