MBB NYC/SF

how reasonable is it to try and recruit at the SF or NYC offices for FT MBB positions when my school isn’t a target for either office but is instead a target for a more regional office? Also, will be an IB SA this summer at MS/GS if it changes anything. interested in these offices bc i’ve lived in the regional city my whole life and want something new

This is possible but challenging. See if you can connect with the NY/SF recruiters (maybe via an intro from your program’s recruiter) and they can hint at how realistic this is. Having a call or virtual coffee chat with a consultant who does recruiting activities for the office will help a lot.

Had a very senior MBB partner tell me "off the record" it's significantly harder to get hired at NYC or SF offices.

Also had a friend at a target school get told after first rounds for an MBB NYC office "yeah, we really don't have anything you could have improved on in the case, we just only has so many spots" or something to that effect. He ended up getting hired at a non NY/SF MBB office of a different firm.

It's not impossible, just know what you're going up against. It's not just meeting the bar for hiring, it's being better than most other candidates who meet the bar.

The "official" stance is that the bar is the same regardless of location. However, as the person above mentioned, some offices receive much more applicants (or more people listing some offices for top choice), so therefore are more competitive. This does not mean that MBB offices in other cities are easy to break in.

I’m at an MBB and I think you may be making a mistake going that route. I understand you may want to live in NY / SF, but you can always do that down the line without a problem, either at your firm or elsewhere. The job is what matters, and if your school has connections at a local office it will be easier getting an offer there.

Yeah, thanks for your response. I did realize that; it was more so personal desire to leave LMAO. Will probably stick to focusing efforts on the local office, but was just curious to gauge the feasibility of another office

Why would MBB accelerate a candidate who has an exploding offer in a different industry? If we’re talking an exploding offer WITHIN consulting it makes more sense, but willingness to accept an offer outside of consulting could signal to recruiters that they aren’t committed to consulting. Only way to rebut that is to blame COVID and say you’re just trying to ensure you have a job during a tough economy/recruiting cycle and would rather be in IB than unemployed.
