Best Decade of Music

1980's are my favorite. I mean MJ, Prince, Van Halen, Phil Collins, Def Leppard, Whitney Houston, Men Without Hats, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Rick James, Madonna. The list goes on and on.

I don't think any decade can compete with that. Real instruments being played > whatever we have now

if we are talking totality of decades, then I think you’re correct. but there were and are so many great individual artists that span decades. for me personally though, it’s the 90s rap scene specifically in New York because I was growing up in Brooklyn at that time. I wish I was a bit older then to understand how big of a change was coming to the game, but even as a kid you could feel it.

This is so sick. Jay Z, Biggie, Nas, Mobb Deep, Wu Tang, Puffy. I’m pretty jealous you got to be around all that as a kid.

love the west coast g-funk era too, but it was different for me since I was on east coast. you from los angeles? agree on the george clinton/parliament influence. you can tell those 90s rappers grooved to that type of sound. probs from their parents.

Classics like the strokes are always good. Been listening to a artist that goes by Jason Is a lot recently. He’s pretty small but releases great songs. The Orwells are also a great band but have had some internal issues so not much new music from them. Wavves is more alternative but they have some really pure garage rock songs.

The 1970s... the last decade of great albums rather than great singles. So much incredible music in so many diverse genres, from Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye, from Abba to Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Bob Marley, Elton John, Queen, The Beatles, Eagles, Earth Wind and Fire. Absolute bangers in the 1970's that are still played and beloved 50 years later.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Def #2 for me after the 90s. I don't even like 80s rock that much. You forgot James Brown and alot of Motown as well (Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Al Green, etc.). Michael Jackson's Off The Wall was also 1979. Probably my favorite from him after Bad.

Only thing the 70s was missing is hip-hop.

Edit: I see you mentioned Gaye

Yes that's a fair point. I threw it in there as Yellow Submarine and Abbey Road were both in 1969, and the individual contributors kept making great music in the decade. However using that logic I guess it's a stretch for Van Halen since only their first two albums were in the 1970s and they helped kick off a different style of rock.

Yeah, hip hop alone wins it for the 90s if you're a hip hop fan. It would be exhausting to make a list. I can't even make a top 3 artists... now for albums (can you tell I like albums), illmatic, Enter the Wu Tang, Aquemini (tied with ATLiens), Moment of Truth, Black Star... and Deltron 3030 misses the 90's cut by 5 months. Black on Both Sides is 1999 so technically makes the cut.

Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, and of course Whitney. Christmas Interpretations is the best Christmas Album, fight me IRL.

Neo Soul is underappreciated, but I can't help but think of the genre as belonging to the early 2000's and Musiq Soulchild, Ne-Yo, Alicia Keys, Usher (had to buy 8701 twice cause one had to stay in the CD changer in the trunk).

2000's is best decade for gospel, but that's probably a discussion away from this message board.

There are too many legendary rap albums from the 90s to count.

I get your point on neo-soul but Baduizm (might be the best neo-soul album of all-time) and Brown Sugar are probably top 5 neo-soul albums and those are both 90s.

watching all that Scorsese got me hooked on 60s 70s rock & folk

Actually, what they were doing back then was comparatively simple compared to today's production. Any producer will tell you, the beats being make what was made back then look trivial, but it was good for it's time.

I just meant there was way more of an emphasis on lyricism back then, whereas I will tell you, I don't really care for lyrics. I care about the catchy melodies.

I like some of the music now, but to call it innovative and "sounds like music, with attention to rhythm and melody" is a lie. I could make a top 100 hit from my laptop, remember that South Park episode? Same thing.

There is no effort put in today's music production. Back in the day they actually had to record live with real instruments. Now that = music

Outdated way of thinking, the computer is an instrument now. And if you can make a top 100 hit from your laptop, you should make one and get rich.

I grew up a hip-hop/R&B fan. That coupled with the nostalgia factor makes the 90s a winner for me.

Beyond hip-hop, which people have already discussed, the 90s still had some greats from other genres in the mix too. I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead on the Rock/Alternative side. You also have some solid artists like Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Usher, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston, etc. on the pop/R&B side.

I think the 70's takes it as probably the most influential decade of music. The effects of 70's disco/soul/folk/rock are still very much present in every genre of popular music - I would argue most music historians would agree. I think people undervalue the importance of disco in particular in influencing modern forms of house/dance music and pop music. I think the 80's are a close second.

Why limit ourselves to rounded decades when decade simply means ten years? In that case, 1964 - 1974. Way too many artists and albums to list in those ten years, but that should (hopefully) be self-evident. That said my personal favorite traditionally defined decade would be the 80s, which was a peak for popular recorded music. The single best year in modern music is easily 1984 (outside of my previously listed best decade); some albums from that year: VH 1984, Prince - Purple Rain, Springsteen - Born in the USA, U2 - Unforgettable Fire, The Cars - Heartbeat City, The Smiths self-titled, Don Henley - Perfect Beast, Metallica - RTL, and sooo many more works that were defining works for their respective artists.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

I've always been a 50's ish sort of guy. Just something about the old crooners, and that time period sort of between the tail end of the big band era and the very beginning of modern pop. If I had to choose my favorite decade would be the 50's, but the 40's and 60's were great as well, plus plenty of good stuff that came out in the 70's too.

Hard to beat the 1780s--Mozart and Haydn in full stride, plus tons of others.

I have friends who claim that Roman music in the first decade after the coronation of Augustus was the best ever, but I haven't checked out that scene.

70s: Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, CCR, Marvin Gaye, Pink Floyd, Earth Wind and Fire, Bill wither, Stevie wonder, Kansas, the jacksons/ young MJ, Johnny cash, ELO, blue oyster cult, the doobie brothers, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Al Green, Black Sabbath, etc.

60s were revolutionary for music. So you have to respect it. 70s as others have said, produced some of the greatest albums and music of all time. 90s were revolutionary as well, but in a different way than the 60s. 80s era music doesn't really do it for me for some reason.

For me personally, Journey & Iron Maiden place the 80s in the number one spot.

Although other artists like 2Pac, Eminem, Linkin Park... make the decision incredibly difficult.

Can you create polls in the forum? Could be helpful to keep some structure/overview with all these discussions going on in the thread

80's and early 2000's are notably great eras for music. What is going on right now with House music I also find very entertaining. Rap music is a complete joke. There's always good music coming out, just have to be open to listening different genres.

You also like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. Sussudio, is a great, great song, a personal favorite.

I believe I can see the future
'Cause I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
Then again, that might have been a dream

I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound
And I just do what I've been told
I really don't want them to come around, oh no

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I can feel their eyes are watching
In case I lose myself again
Sometimes I think I'm happy here
Sometimes, yet I still pretend

I can't remember how this got started
But I can tell you exactly how it will end

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same

I'm writing on a little piece of paper
I'm hoping someday I might find
Well I'll hide it behind something
They wont look behind

I am still inside here
A little bit comes bleeding through
I wish this could've been any other way
But I just don't know, I don't know
What else I can do

Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain
Every day is exactly the same
