PE Recruiting from a MM PE Analyst role
How do PE firms consider MM PE analysts for recruiting? Historically the top funds have only taken bankers and consultants from top groups, but I'm wondering how they'd look at someone with 2 years as a PE analyst (at a shop where associates come from BB/EBS) compared to someone who did the 2 years of IB at a BB/EB themselves.
PE Analysts are a relatively new phenomenon, so it would be great to hear any stories of these analysts moving to other associate roles, or insights from PE professionals/recruiters as to how they'd evaluate a PE analyst.

Trying to make a group chat for people in this situation (PE analysts / incoming PE analysts). It's a small community so we gotta support each other. PM me if you want to be added!
Interested in this group! In the same boat
Interested as well. I'm a year behind (just accepted a 2021 SA offer at a PE firm ($1B in AUM), but still curious about this

I could be totally wrong, but everyone I've seen who started as a PE analyst did not change firms, rather they were internally promoted to associate or left the firm to do something else (bschool, corp fin). I think PE firms really prefer the IB / Consulting background. Again just my $.02
I worked in MM PE 2.5 years out of school and lateraled to the only MF I applied for. I still think IB is looked upon better, but I hit a home run on the modeling test and that’s all the MF cared about.
Bro... modeling tests are a check-in-the-box in interview processes.
I feel like this point is a bit exaggerated. I agree that having a perfect model doesn't guarantee an offer (I very much believe that the process of deciding on the outcome of a candidate is far more subjective then people like to admit). However, knowing the modeling ability of my peers in a decent BB banking group and my peers at a target school, I would be very very surprised if most people who get offers aced their modeling tests. I think getting models down right is far more rare than the norm.
Hey could you PM me? Thanks!
