Corporate Startup Accelerator to VC
Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone had any insight on the potential of making this jump after 2-3 years at a F15 company in New York. Would I need to make multiple jumps or could I jump directly from the accelerator to a small to mid-sized commercial VC. I just really wanna start building up carry as soon as possible and wanna use this current opportunity I potentially have (don't wanna jinx it) to just put myself in a position where I can in my mid-to-late 20s be able to get a house in Greenwich for me and my girlfriend (I don't actually know if I wanna live there, but I wanna be wealthy enough to be able to live there if I wanted to). Really appreciate anyone's help and thank you so much :)
I'm not sure if this is a troll post but on the off chance that it isn't -
It's hard to make that jump from of a normal accelerator, much more so from a corporate accelerator.
The skillsets required in VC vs an accelerator are so different - investing vs. running programs.
Thank you for your response! For someone who is planning on starting at a F15 corporate accelerator in February, however, what would your recommendation be for a path onto Wall Street? Furthermore, would Wall Street be the best exit for me or should I consider a different strategy for my future career. Thank you!!
There are many areas of high finance. It really depends on what you are optimizing for and what the gig at the corporate accelerator is like.
If the role is very hands-on and you get to work with management to execute their goals, you might be able to get into consulting or even the the portfolio mgt side of PE.
Firstly, between this corporate accelerator gig and a big 4 consultant position, would you recommend the consultant position then? Secondly, what is the comp like in portfolio mgmt at PE/VC firms, I know about Insight Partner’s Onsite which seems to have comparable comp to their investment team but I’m not sure if this is what you mean. Thank you!
Sorry, I can't really give a concrete answer to your first question given I skipped the 2 yr consulting to VC track and went straight to VC.
In terms of comp, as a general rule the portfolio mgt team will make a shade less than the deal team.
Significantly better chances breaking into VC from MBB than Big 4. I've seen Big 4 consultants break into VC but mostly at no-name firms that chew them out after a couple years without the greatest exit opportunities.
Forget about the pay and ask yourself if you want to be investing in companies or helping them optimize operations. Keep in mind that VC firms that do have platform teams generally don't work at a depth that management consultants would work with their clients at. Some companies have more in-depth operations support teams like A16Z or First Round while others like Benchmark couldn't care less.
If I were to say start at this F15 corporate accelerator gig, would I be able to lateral into the operations support team of say A16Z or First Round. Going beyond there, would I be able to say lateral into the portfolio management team of a large PE firm?
I’m a campaigner and I care more about helping the entrepreneur attain their direct goal rather than sourcing deals and performing lots of due diligence (not to say there’s anything wrong with that, I just feel I personally would get chewed up by the competition there given my personality). I’ve always wanted to be in PE as I love long hours but wanted to find maybe an alternate route as IB just doesn’t seem like something I’d ever get anything out of other than ending up as a career banker. Would the position I have hopefully been so blessed to receive position me well to say break into either the operations support team at large VCs or portfolio management in large PE firms? Thanks you!!
