Corp Dev / Strategy Comp?

Hey everyone - Know this has been discussed in the past but seems most of the information is dated. Curious if anyone has insight into what someone (<5 years of experience), may expect to earn moving into a Corporate Strategy / Development group at a F100 firm.

also would be helpful to hear any information on salary progression (from entry level to Director) if at all possible!

any information would be helpful here and any information on business school placement from a platform like this would also be great!

If a couple years of prior background in IB, and I'd assume similar with MBB or other great consulting experience, I'd expect base of ~$100K with ~15-20% bonus target. It'd likely be a bit higher in tech (perhaps with some stock component), and perhaps higher if in NYC too.

If closer to 4-5 years of experience in IB, PE, or MBB-type consulting, I'd shoot for ~$120-$150K base assuming you'd come in at a manager or sr manager level. At this level, bonus target may be 5-10% higher than at a senior analyst level, and you may get some SBC at non-tech firms at this point. $200K all-in would be very solid, at least outside of tech.

You've narrowed to Fortune 100 which helps keep rigidity to your list. I'd argue Corp dev / strategy varies greatly by company, leadership, how important they find that function to be, and candidates' pedigree. My understanding of NYC with the caveat that analyst is kind of a crapshoot because Corp dev teams (especially lean ones) tend not to have super junior people brought on.

Edit: fuck my list, MMBanker14 is pretty spot on, I've seen people with 1-3 years IBD + 1-4 years CD at 200k TC, maybe a bit more.

As posters have said above it really just depends a lot from group to group. What I've seen in corp dev from various positions I've come across:

  • 2-3 years IB / similar experience -> Senior Analyst ~$100k base with ~15% bonus
  • ~5ish years IB / similar experience -> Manager ~$150k all in compensation

These were from positions in mid-tier cities and were mostly F500 companies.

I recently finished my two years and IB and got two offers in corp dev:

One was a tech startup (but valued at around $5bn EV from VCs) and offered around 110 all in (90 base, 10% bonus, around 10k in stock)

the other was a more established tech company and offered 120 base and 10% bonus (no stock); this is on the pretty high end from speaking to peers

The Beltsander

Below data is a for a medium to large financial institution that's been acquisitive.

Sr. Analyst / Associate: $100-110k base + 30%

Manager: $140k + 30-50% (cash / stock split)

What’s the cash-stock split at the manager level?

ive typically seen 80-20 with larger part being cash and stock on a multi-year vest

Another data point -

I am 26 and recently accepted a director position at PortCo, prior to that worked for 3 years in Corp Strat at a F250, and 2 years in management consulting

F250:

PortCo:

  • Director ~$200K ($155 base, $40-60K bonus depending on performance)

Without giving too much away.... there were a lot of changes that happened at my fortune 250 that led to me having more and more responsibility. Fortunately, be it because of working hard or pure luck, I was consistently crushing it, learning a ton, and putting more on my plate. I was approached by a recruiter for the PortCo that I blew off multiple times before finally taking a call about the role. I was honestly happy at my last job and had no intentions of leaving.

Long story short, I ended up going through a fairly lengthy interview process:

  • HR Interview
  • PE Firm Interview
  • CFO of PortCo interview
  • Weekend Case Study
  • Behavioral Assessment and Cognitive Assessment (this really helped, thank God my mother is so smart and blessed me with good genes... 99th percentile which was highest they have ever seen)
  • Flown out for 2 days - filled with meeting with CEO, PE Partners, and probably 15 other people

Throughout the whole process I think I had a positive attitude and showed genuine interest in the company. I definitely took a step back in terms of sheer dollars that I will be able to claim decision making over (was managing decisions in the $XXMs monthly at F250), but think that it will be worth it in the end. The PortCo is fairly small, but I honestly feel like I am getting on a rocket ship that is ready to blast off based on the growth plan.

So, that was a lot of information. But to sum it up, I would say that most of it had to do with luck, first and foremost (right place, right time). Secondly, I would attribute it to me taking the time to really have an in depth understanding of my industry, accompanied with large increases in responsibility over the time that I was at the F250. Again, this was luck due to Rx.

If I could give you one piece of advice... train like you're in the minors and could be called up to the bigs at any moment. Always be bettering yourself. Then, when luck strikes and the opportunity is in front of you, hit it out of the park.

Bump - what kind of comp can a 1-3 year IB analyst expect on a corp dev / corp strategy / strategic finance role? Trying to figure out how to best maximize comp and progression potential in both comp and career on a corp exit (going PE-backed Co vs F500 vs startup) at a junior level

2nd year analyst in a Corp Strat / Strategic Finance seat at a F100 brand name company. Our team serves as internal consultants for c suite on both long term strategic planning as well as investment DD and analysis.

  • Base is $95k
  • Bonus ~$10k depending on company performance

Lateraling from IB you’re probably looking at ~120ish + 15-20 bonus. Next level up is where you hit mid-mgmt (ppl with 8ish years experience) and those guys are probs pulling ~180-200
