I'd emphasize the banker relationships and additionally, sourcing ability. Bringing deals in while being able to execute is a sure fire top performing quality (if you're shop that lets you have any exposure to that). I'd also add, as is in most finance careers, having a strong macro sense goes a long way.
Be someone who your firm would feel comfortable leaving in a room by yourself with a management team (whether with a prospective target or your current portfolio company execs). You are obviously not expected to carry the room in your first year or two as an associate but demonstrating that you are someone who may one day be able to be a peer to CEOs and CFOs is an important trait that PE shops look for in deciding who they'd want to bring back post-MBA.
^ I second the above. I've been in rooms with PE associates (albeit senior associates) who punched well above their weight. Was impressive. Have been on flip side where I couldn't tell if he/she was a PE associate or just a glorified secretary
I think this could be very helpful. Could elaborate on this a bit? Are you mostly referring to dd'ing management teams? Any tips on how to learn/prepare for this except obviously knowing the industry/company really well and asking intelligent questions on the back of that?
the type of PE associates that get churned out of the 2+2 model are the kinds that are pure finance junkies. It's really as simple as going above and beyond and getting to know the industry better. it's not a matter of knowing it better than the mgmt team, you never will and the partner's themselves don't assuming it's a niche port-co. ie. i run a niche teleco company that's fairly technical. Understanding the basic terminology when I'm talking about Semi's wafer prod capacity is helpful so that I wouldn't have to pause every other minute in a meeting to explain
