I mean, I think it's dependent on how much you invest in it and what you're trying to achieve. In my case, when I was doing absolutely nothing (in between internships and on summer vacations), I would hop on and spend a couple hours playing and really leveling up. Now with classes and some other obligations, I'll have class/homework open on one monitor or on one tab, and then Old School RuneScape (OSRS) on the other tab. The nice thing is that not all of the skills require constant clicking and attention, such as combat skills, for instance: I would typically find myself going down in the stronghold of security beneath the barbarian village to AFK train on flesh crawlers.
I believe that some aspects of OSRS do require more attention, especially quests or some of the other skills that require more clicks and interaction, but there are definitely ways that OSRS can help pass time without requiring constant attention. Plenty of other games, though, if OSRS isn't for OP!
I'm not going to agree with everything above, since some, like Skyrim had pretty chunky requirements when they were released. Time has dulled the hit, but don't think of them as lightweight

Skyrim and WoW generally require significant time investments, and to describe there as being an 'end' as in FFVII is probably not really correct. The others are basically play as much as you want.
Not sure if you're looking at FPS but Counterstrike was a classic. I have been out of the gaming scene for a few years so there are probably new and better FPS but I really liked the simplicity but difficulty of it.
CSGO is simple but hard to master. Don’t think the op would enjoy it very much, unless he has buddies to play with.
I was going to recommend CS:GO too, great way to get cheeki breeki with the boys.
Genshin Impact, which recently launched completely free-to-play on mobile and other platforms. The launch has been really big, and it's interesting if you're into Breath of the Wild-esque games.
You guys should look into shadow pc (shadow.tech). Literally a remote high powered pc you rent for $15-20 per month. The gameplay video is streamed to you and you can play it on an old laptop, phone, iPad etc as long as internet connection is decent.

Yeah if you have a good internet connection it works great for most non ultra high quality FPS games. 1-2 months wait time though if you sign up; they need to get your system setup and demand is pretty high right now.
Cs and valorant are pretty easy for computers to run. If you are trying to sink time into a game, those will do the trick if you like shooter games. That being said, you're going to be trash compared to other players.
There are some nice casual mobile games tbh. I was a member of PC master race for years but getting old is hell. Im going to get an xbox series x when all of the bot assholes that buy it out to resell on ebay get their fill though. You will see me on COD getting raped by 9-year-olds because I haven’t played an xbox in over 10 years.

Dota 2 - probably one of the greatest games ever invented but its a bit of a high time investment early on. Once you get past the steep learning curve it's fun and you can play it pretty casually.
age of empires 2 - GOAT game. Has dope campaigns, single player player mode and multiplayer mode
Dota 2 is easily my favorite game of all time and does not need very high specs to run. I had to quit cold turkey about 2 years ago because I was getting way too addicted to it, but I still watch it on twitch from time to time. I had the huge benefit if playing it since the WC3 custom map days, so I could master all the base heroes/items and then learn the new ones as they were released over the years. I can't even fathom how complicated it must be for a new player to jump in now.... I'm scared to even jump back in myself just from the patches / new stuff over the past couple years. That said, if you're willing to put in the work to learn a very complicated new game, I can't think of anything more fun than Dota.
ETA: Another reason I stopped playing was because the games took a long time, usually about 30-60 minutes on average with an occasional 60+, but I believe its been rebalanced over the years to have more of a 25-30 minute typical game length (correct me if I'm wrong). IMO this makes it a lot more approachable and has be considering jumping back in.
With 5000 hours invested in dota 2 and don't know how much more in wc3 dota and still being trash, I wouldn't call low skill hahahah
Don't know what low spec means, but doesn't seem characteristic of Modern Warfare. However, it's a very high quality first person shooter with multiple game modes and ways to play the game. The campaign doesn't require much time in a single day because it auto-saves at checkpoints throughout where you can pick back up at any time. Campaign is very good with a surprisingly realistic feel. It's like controlling your own Navy Seal Android with very modern and realistic situations to the day.
Then, there's Warzone, which doesn't take much skill at all to have fun. You might not win very many games, but it's still a nice chill time looting and testing your skills against the other 150 or so players in a battle royale setting. Super fun in my opinion whether you're good or not, because the board consisting of so many players never really means losing is a personal thing. And the map is pretty engaging as well.
Multiplayer is more intense than the other two gamemodes and requires skill, but you learn fast as you play. If you haven't checked MW out, I highly recommend it. Burns steam and is incredibly fun and engaging. Well worth buying the full game imo. I play on the console, but have heard the PC version might be even better as far as being fast. And I think you could always just get a PC controller if you prefer the joystick.

Warzone is a blast, especially if you have friends that play. I played a lot of FPS growing up, so it was easy to get back into it, but I've had a bunch of friends pick it up for the first time during covid and they've all been enjoying it.
Theoretically, the games are all skill-based matchmaking focused, so you should mostly be competing with people are a similar skill level. I can definitely tell when playing against stronger/weaker lobbies.
World of Warcraft CLassic
Mostly posting here to see if anyone else fan-girls over this game as much as I do, but Nier: Automata is hands down the single best gaming experience of my life. It came out in 2017 but I could run it pretty well on a $600 laptop that had a dedicated graphics card. If you have any kind of proper PC hardware or similar low-grade laptop with a GPU you should be good.
I wouldn't describe it as "casual" but since it's single-player you can take your time with it, and I recommend you do. The gameplay is a lot of fun (high-action with a lot of variety) but the story line is what kills me. There are a metric shit ton of double meanings and triple meanings and breaking of the 4th wall throughout the game that really begs the player to think existentially throughout, and when it all finally clicks together I was literally speechless and in my thoughts about it for weeks afterward. Just don't google too much about it because the spoilers would be really killer to the experience. It It has ruined any other game I have picked up since because they simply don't compare.

The Respawnables
It's been said a few times but gotta emphasize this again... Among Us is a great game. Quick rounds so you can have fun without having to spend 30mins-1hr+ any time you want to play. Also if you get a decent sized group together, it's a banger with the homies.
Big fan of Brawl Stars, it's low commitment (3-5 min per match), FTP but you don't feel like you have to pay to advance, and enough of an adrenaline / competitive booster shot that you get it out of your system without feeling like you HAVE to keep playing.
Fantasy sports. I play Fantasy Premier League. League lasts 9 months with matches every weekend. whole week you look at stats and stuff and then create your team for the weekend. no specs required at all.
