What is your deal with square-toed shoes?
Why does everyone on this board hate square-toed shoes? One person even said it make you look like a dbag. Can you explain this to me please?

Don't completely agree with the comment... but the video is one of the all-time youtube greats... so silver banana for you.
Honestly, it just looks bad.
too pilgrim
I hate square toe shoes. They scream Kenneth Cole and KC does not equal banker.
because they look like dogshit
How do you not get it? It's just passe. It was a brief fad and now looks cheap and ridiculous. Do you still wear braided belts and high waisted stone washed jeans?
Yes
Santoni Loafer's and razor sharp pleated dress slacks M-F, driving mocs and Banana Republic Chinos for weekends. That's it.
That would be fucking nuts if a first year came in wearing $1,000 shoes -- and loafers to top it off!
Loafers = baller. 1k for a pair Santoni's? Usually leave Swarovski Crystal studded ones for Euro trash.
It's a matter of taste. If you wear square toed shoes, then you have no taste.
If you want to work as a Verizon salesman, that's up to you...
You guys are hilarious. I didn't realize how much the shape of the toes of dress shoes really affect you guys. So basically if I see someone with square-toed shoes, I should assume he's either from Jersey, poor, is a dbag, had no taste, or he works retail? Or maybe he just has square-toed shoes...
Not either/or....and, and, and, and.
Haha, I think I get your point. You people are really anti square-toe shoes. I mean it really ignites a fire for you guys.
I want to know what happens when you see a fellow employee or someone on the streets with square-toe shoes?
.
Assume he is a Verizon wireless salesman. Will probably have a Van Heusen shirt/tie combo to go with the square toe shoes.

Asking this question is like asking why wearing a purple velvet tux covered in dog shit is a bad idea. It just is.
It's all about the wing tips. Preferably something Italian, a la:
http://www.bluefly.com/Ferragamo-brandy-leather-'Torrent'-wingtip-oxfor…
I'm kind of disturbed by the picture in the OP....it's man heels a la liberace.
Square toed shoes have their place and it's not in IBD is all you need to know. It'd be like wearing black biking boots to a formal dinner; they probably won't let you in anyways and you look tacky/like a tard besides. Dress for the occasion; dress for success. I imagine there's some ubiquitous quote that should go here, but I can't remember it so...
-N.
A jean vest on top of business casual isn't the best analogy here. In my opinion, shoes make the man. I think, the shoes make the outfit. Especially in the world of finance where its one of the few areas you can distinguish your outfit. A guy could be wearing a good looking suit and then you see his shoes and you can't help but ask yourself how in the hell he could get it so wrong.
I don't know why it is square shoes don't work, they just don't. Maybe the fact that they're SQUARE. Maybe its that they just look clumsy. Like you could trip any minute. In my opinion, square shoes and suits should be avoided at all costs.
If you walked into my company with square toed shoes, I'd fire you. I would ding you from the interview before you opened your mouth. Square toed shoes are about is bad as camo cargo shorts.
There is no reason to further explain why they are terrible looking, they just are. Just as there should be no reason the explain why a straight man shouldn't own a toy poodle. Its purely intuitive lol
You killed it with the 'lol'
wearing square toed shoes is like wearing short sleeve dress shirts
both = fail
They just look like shit.
Everything that has rubber sticking out is not done.
this thread is hilarious
I'm just confused as to how someone can look at a pair of square toed shoes and think, "Yes, that would look great." It seems self explanatory
The intensity of opinions on fashion on this site never fail to astound me.
Same here. I'm so glad I started this thread, it has given me many laughs. It stemmed from ana conversation I had with a co-worker who was wearing square-toed shoes. I also have some square-toed loafers, and yes, I do wear them to work.
I'm a broke college student and I've known square-toed shoes are ugly as fk since birth, I dont need WSO to tell me that. Either you have style, or you dont.
You should be fined or fired for wearing square-toed shoes.....
You: "Welcome to Applebee's!" Me: "Hey killer shoes bro...."
You guys are so petty and affeminate for caring that much about the shape of someone elses shoes. I mean really, judging someone entirely based on their shoes?
Thats like saying he is wearing a pink suit we wont care....
I really didn't realize square toes were on the same level as a pink suit.
This thread gets the official Cam'ron no homo stamp.
Haha, some of you people are hilarious. I don't see anything wrong with them, in fact I'm wearing them right now...along with jeans and a Nike DRI-FIT polo shirt in the team of my choice...so maybe I'm not the best example, lol.
While I agree they don't convey professionalism like a cap toe does and I don't think they are ALL hideous, although most of them are clunky and goofy looking...plus I don't think mine appear to be as square as some of the ones I've seen recently, which has made it hard for me to find a decent replacement. To each their own. If you don't own them already I wouldn't suggest buying them over some cap toes for interviews for first year or SA positions, etc.
Regards
According to the people on this board, you're probably a piece of garbage from Jersey.
I'm not from Jersey, but I've been known to punch loud mouth, poofy-haired midgets in the mouth right after...
...TEEEE SHIIRRRRTTTTT TIIIMMMEEEE!!
Regards
Maybe it's just me, but I don't tend to judge what another dude wears. I prefer looking at the ladies...
AMEN. I really couldn't care less about what my co-workers wear. But hey, you're only as valuable as the shape of your shoes.
Are there any girls on this list?
If you wear square-toed shoes, you got cabbage in yo muff.
Squarish can be fine sometimes, these penny's definitely pass any sort of test:

^^Yeah, those shoes are cute. I can hold your purse while you try those on. Oh, and here is the tampon you needed.

Johnny,
You need this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Gentleman-Gets-Dressed-Up-Gentlemanners/dp/140160…
almost as queer as converse all-stars
I hate to say this, but I think you guys have gotten to me. I may actually get rid of my squared-toe shoes. DAMMMITTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read some articles and forums about square-toed shoes, and I have to cave in and say you guys may be right about this one. I officially retired my two pair of Kennth Cole shoes (Yes, I actually do have those).
I gave them to my neighbor who thought they were amazing. I hope he doesn't interview for a finance job wearing those things.
It wasn't too big of a loss, I think they only cost me like $50 each. Now I have to search for these "wing tips" you guys keep talking about.
They're out of style...they were cool for a hot second...literally, many years ago. They look cheap, tacky, and classless...like your'e trying to be stylish but you don't know anything about style.
I would start with a pair of black cap-toes before getting wingtips jonnyseed. Church's Consul is the prototypical oxford cap toe in my book (http://www.church-footwear.com/churchs.html).
Agreed.
Do any of you actually pay $600 for a pair of shoes, even if they aren't square-toed.
It is NOT hip to be square.
James Bond "might" be able to get away with it, so unless you're James Bond or work in the Circus, stay away from square toed shoes.
Your toes do not form a square and your feet do not constitute a rectangle: so nor should your shoes.
It would be like wearing a shirt in the shape of a box,,,, ridiculous.
.
.
There are two guys from New Jersey who I work with and they both wear square-toed shoes most of the time, usually the slip-on kinds.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41LMqxdH3dL.SL160.jpg
After I noticed this, I'm glad I got rid of mine.
http://www.ferragamo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategories_31150_…
Are these considered to be in the "square-toed" category? I think they look pretty fuckin good.
Or these?
http://www.ferragamo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategories_31150_…
Or are these "trapezoid-toe" shoes lol
No those aren't. Check out this link though:
http://community.artofmanliness.com/profiles/blogs/art-of-manliness-suit-school-3
"Companies make square-toed shoes because it's cheaper and easier than making a good rounded toe shoe. They pass it off as fashion, but it just makes your feet look like Frankenshoes, and they laugh at the increased profit margins. Moreover, they are normally made of inferior leather and have rubber soles."
I saw a history channel show where they showed that fashion in medieval armor was cyclical with the armored boot changing from pointed to square to pointed again over a twenty year span. So I guess it just depends where we are in the fashion cycle.
"Don't Mess With the Zohan" was on TV a couple days ago. There was a shout out to Kenneth Cole square-toed shoes. It was obviously mocking people who wore those shoes.
When I saw that scene I couldn't stop laughing, all I thought about was this thread.
You should never wear square-toed shoes with a suit. Round is always the way to go. Classy, timeless.
Square-toed shoes look silly because they look too big and too big looks clumsy. If you saw a guy wearing a jacket two sizes too big for him, you'd think he was silly. It's the same with the shoes.
Or they just look cheap.
What about zip-up square toed shoes?

I'm a college student that bought these because I don't own enough money and I didn't know about this anti-square-toe stuff. Just wondering if I should buy a non-square pair before interviews start?
Absolutely no-go. Return those instantly or set them on fire.
Visit herring shoes, they have quite a good selection of shoes in the student segment http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-list.php?brandid=6#d84

How many shoes should I be looking at on a graduate budget? Will 2 nice black ones suffice for 2 years? Or would you recommend 2 black and 1 brown (3 total)?
Also are there any good places anyone knows of in Australia less than $200?
On our floor its business casual, so no need for formal black shoes really. If I had to throw out my 13 pairs and start anew I'd go for a pair in brown calf, a pair in brown suede, a pair in black calf (just in case).
Suede is the most comfortable to wear.
Also remember to match your belt with your shoes.
Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately I don't know what "calf" means in the context of work shoes (I've googled).
I'll need to get a pair for a BB interview in 3 days. What do you think about some of these? http://www.zushoe.com.au/catalogue/premium_mens_shoes.aspx
They're all rubber soles though and I heard that this is bad? Is it?
Also, when you say match shoes to belt, do you mean brown belt for brown shoes or what, I'm really clueless about business fashion and my family are hopeless haha
Ah, by calf i mean just regular leather. And matching the belt is exactly that, try to wear brown belt with brown shoes etc. It doesnt have to be the same brown, just not too far apart color wise.
Look around http://www.styleforum.net/ for ideas on where to shop in australia, use the search tool in the forums.
Return the shoes promptly.
I'd recommend 1 black and 1 conservative brown. If you want 3 then do 1 black and 2 browns. why?
I can't wear my black shoes with my navy suit - only brown? Is this consensus?
ding them
Brooks Brothers has some really nice cap toes on clearance at the moment:
http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Se…
They're black calf and regularly $500, marked down to $234 or something like that, and if you qualify for their credit card you get 25% off your first purchase which makes them like $175. Getting a $500 pair of shoes that will last you many years and you'll eventually get re-soled a number of times for $175 is a smokin' deal. I know money's tight, but think about it.
"Ideal" color pairing. In the free world you can wear red converse with your navy suit (although i'd advise against that for interviews at least). On a serious note, navy could be worn with black or brown. Although brown is definitely more stylish.
Don't know about city vs country though. newfirstyear might have a point there.
I wore a navy brooks suit and black cap toes to all my interviews... i think its why I got dinged
LMAO. Yes, I'm sure that was it...
I hate squared toed shoes as much as anyone else on this board, and would obviously never own any. But was really wondering why is it that squared toed shoes are hated by wall street types? Would somoene care to elaborate as to how squared toed shoes received their bad rap?
haha i know what a PT cruiser is, its the second ugliest car behind the pontiac aztek
Just look at it from an aesthetic POV.
It throws off a well-fitting suit. Ideally, you want to keep your silhouette in line.
It's not wall street types per se. It's the fashion aware community. As I read somewhere once, they're like the PT Cruiser; under no circumstances they look good.
note: PT Cruiser is a car. Look it up if you don't know it.
Let me preface this by saying yes, you should avoid square toe shoes as they are less fashionable and aren't looked upon favorably in the finance world (as this thread evidences). The ones you picked are little too casual, so I would recommend against them.
However, just on my way to work this morning I was noticing the shoes of what many suits we're wearing. And, I'd say in a good portion, you'd find square toes shoes. Bottom line: who gives a shit. If you work your ass off, your work product will speak a lot louder than the toe shape of your shoes. This board seems overemphasis on these sort of things.
But, again, non-square toe shoes are preferable.
idk what you guys are talking about..OP's shoes are gorgeous
Since we are on the topic. Does this apply to loafers, such as these?

[quote=Bernankey]Since we are on the topic. Does this apply to loafers, such as these?

I think those are ugly regardless of the toe shape, but the square toe definitely is not as bad as the OP's.
If you're going to wear bit loafers, go with the classic Gucci (or another brand that has made a shoe identical to the Gucci one)
Gucci: http://bit.ly/GYfQ3t
Cole Haan imitation: http://bit.ly/HqQ9YL
Damn, I only paid about $50 more than those Cole Haans to get my Ferragamo loafers (brand new). That's a fucking ripoff for those CH's.
OP, whatever you buy, shop around and do your due diligence before you pull the trigger.
I hate the way box toes shoes look. Go with Cole Han they are the best shoes. They team up with NIKE so the shoes are extremely Comfortable.

Square toed shoes make you look like a duck.
The words that come to mind are: "Mentally handicapped".
I personally think they look fine, but I refrain from wearing them because everyone else hates them. Fashion is ultimately subjective, but it's not worth the risk of being judged in this situation.
I'll never know what's wrong with them, but I blindly accept that there's something wrong with them
I don't usually buy into what the intertubes tell me, but this link perfectly sums up what your footwear should look like:
http://tsbmen.com/26586/a-shoe-shape-guide/shoe-shape-guide/
I'b been wearing these to the office for a while. Are the toes too squared?
I bought square toed shoes once. Never again.
There is nothing wrong with squared toed shoes or any of the other fashion rubbish. I avoid them anyway to not have to deal with ridicule or looks of derision from toolish people, but in the end, it's just nonsense.
They look cheaply made (and usually are) and are absurdly ugly. Almost as bad as wearing a black suit to work

Thank you for taking the time to look!
Uh, no.
You sure? Did you check the top view? They look somewhat square, I don't know. It might be my irracional fear of square-toe shoes that has been instilled on me by WSO lol.
This is a square: □ This is a circle: ᴏ
I can see what you are talking about. It is not super noticeable but it's there. Get something different if its going to bother you. If you are looking for cheaper shoes you can get some J&M's for next to nothing on Ebay.
I believe that it is technically called "chisel toed", so I think you're good.
Agree with Oneal^^ . In that prie range you would do better with J&M or Cole Haan. Florsheim are poorly constructed and just feel cheap.
If you have to ask...
In all seriousness grab a better brand than Florsheim. As @"FeelingMean" mentioned Cole Haan and J&M are much better. Allen Edmonds if you are really serious.
@"AcctNerd" Allen Edmonds when on sale.
sort of
They're not, but that glossy shit is gonna look like the shit that it is. You'd be better off getting some Docker cap toes if you're on that much of a budget.
You just don't want to roll into work looking like you just stepped off the Mayflower.
Lol
go on ebay
Yes, I am a freshman. The reason these caught my eye is they look a lot like the AE Park Avenues.
btw get oxfords, not this derby stuff, it is just does not look that good
They aren't square-toed but they are ugly as sin.
Get Beckett Simonen if your budget is small

Having said that, would something like this be considered squared toed?
http://m.nordstrom.com/s/3167582/??cm_ven=Linkshare&cm_cat=partner&cm_p…
I don't have this exact pair but I saw a pair with a design just like this at a store for a good sale. The ones I saw and this ones in this pic both appear to have a somewhat squared tip though not quite noticeable unless you're looking carefully at it.
I was about to say "if you have to ask...." but those are legitimately the hermaphrodites of oxfords.
at that price, go J&M to avoid ambiguity (http://www.johnstonmurphy.com/melton-cap-toe/2388.html?dwvar_2388_color…)
Completely fine. Let's be real, no one gives a shit.
I like the J&M's that brofessor rec'd better.
Its a Joe Everyman shoe. You should be good
Get your ass back on The Mayflower!
Looks fine to me, I was afraid when I first clicked the link.
