Where does Moelis stand these days

I'm not as familiar with dealflow at boutique banks, but I did notice a flurry of PR and excitement when Ken first left UBS. Phenomenal guy of course, and his practice landed some incredible deals in the first few months. I'm curious now that the buzz has subsided, where people feel Moelis fits into the picture. Are they a nichey restructuring shop like HLHZ, are they well rounded like LAZ, and how do they stack up in the world of boutique banks? Just trying to get market color.

somehow they must be doing something otherwise they wouldnt be going berserk in hiring people and opening new office locations.

here in london they already have increased their size tremendously. I havent seen them on any deals recently though so I have no clue what they are doing.

Keep in Moelis is only 3 years old, while other top boutiques like Evercore are 14 years old. Moelis initially hired a lot at the senior level without the junior ranks to back them up (hence why analysts would get destroyed). Their analyst classes are getting pretty big (~50 analysts next year), so this should allow them to flex some muscle.

I haven't seen them on any huge deals recently (as opposed to 2008/09), so it's hard to say where they're going. Time will tell...

this, london announced 2 reasonable sized (~€3.0bn) deals recently I think?

i see them turning into a pre-IPO Lazard (before all the top guys left). Very strong restructuring, top M&A, a bunch of big name relationship bankers, a hard working culture and about the same size (eventually). It'll be interesting to see how the current analyst class places, as in the past when they were smaller and got killed the analysts were treated to some of the best placement on the street.
