Nomura S&T Summer Analyst 2012
I will be working in Nomura's Global Markets division this summer. I was wondering if anyone had advice on what I could do to prep for this internship in the months ahead of summer? Tips from any past SAs will be helpful (even if not in Nomura)
Did anyone intern at Nomura last summer? What was the full-time offer rate like? And any tips on how to be successful there?
Thanks!
With this market ..kiss as much ass you can to land a FT offer...good luck though
get a haircut, read financial stuff, take a last minute vacation while you can
If you're going to be at Nomura, get on the rates desk at all costs.
LOL
I heard only 6 out of 48 S&T interns got FT offers last summer.
Good luck.
Just read up on the mkts, help out any way you can, and learn as much as you can.
No.
That is what I heard as well. my friend interned in Global Markets at Nomura in 2011 in NYC and said around 6-8 interns out of the entire class got a FT offer. It was a little better on the IBD side though...
^ If it's not true, how many got FT offers?
Offer rate sucked last year in London. Around 10 - 15 offers for around 50 guys
What was the lifestyle/culture like? Did you learn a lot? How did it set you up for FT recruiting?
9 offers, 3 got put on hold out of 40 (I can name everyone).
Lifestyle-- laid back, but really desk dependent. Some desks just want you to chill and learn as much as you can. some will hit you with a ton of work. not many people going in on weekends.
culture-- entrepreneurial, ton of people came from different places so they're just starting to gel. initiative is rewarded.
tips-- be sharp and hungry. go the extra mile to learn the product WELL.. and not just the basics. take on challenges. dress well and dress appropriately. pick-a-bagel will always eff up your order so type your prints out. know when to ask questions and when to shut up. have a sense of humor and be able to bro out when its slow and shoot the sht... they don't want to work with people who can't chill.
bonus points-- learn VBA, don't get too hammered in front of HR at any of the intern events, keep a notebook and log everything you learn each day, wear v neck undershirts so you don't look like an idiot and a tie the first day.
desks-- I didn't hear any negative feedback about any particular desk. know calculus and vba if you're doing anything with derivs so you can at least try understanding stuff. FX is fun because you get to play a simulated trading game
I think that covers pretty much everything.
Thanks long-gamma! Sounds worrying, but do you know if last year was an anomaly? Do you know what the 2010 offer rate was, or is this how Nomura usually operates?
I don't understand why people give out false information like that. According to Nomura HR, they gave out 22 FT offers.
don't believe hr, i can say this from experience
I've heard they've been paying above street to lure in talent in their dying days of late. With that in mind, it might be fun for the summer but I'd look elsewhere for FT.
Nomura's offer rate is was very low last year. I had a friend who was part of their S&T program last summer. Out of everyone that he remembered from Nomura, none of them got an offer. Not to say no one in the program got the offer, but the dozen to two dozen kids he got close with all got rejected.
I just spoke with a friend of mine who was there last summer.
Only 10 out of 40-50 got FT offers for S&T/Global Markets. Other divisions were better, but he told me a lot got rejected. So really, more negative than positive at Nomura.
Have heard they are changing how they are hiring- read this a while back and it makes sense.... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-27/nomura-reeling-from-lehman-han…
