Networking
I’ve been putting in a lot of time into Linkedin finding and connecting specific people on teams I would like to pivot too, former employees of these roles, people on teams at different companies that are of interest to me.
I don’t plan on pivoting to a new role for another 9 months at a minimum. I’ve successfully got a few virtual meetings/chats with some people I’ve connected with. How long do these usually last? How much time can I expect to have?
What should I be asking? What are the goals I should be looking at? What is the culture or expectations of these meetings?
I guess what I am trying to get at is I want to set myself up for these positions and want to learn from them but I’m not sure what the expectations are from them. Is there a networking element that extends beyond just a single meeting? Chatting again?
For some context I’m at a larger firm now in a entry level back office role, with some strategy/corp dev experience at a startup.
Are these people who work in roles that you want to pivot to at other firms? If they work for the same firm as you do, I think you're fine to network whenever, but if all you are doing is trying to introduce yourself to hopefully get a foot in the door at another firm, unless you keep the relationship going, you are not going to gain any advantage by starting nine months out. I'm about eight years into my career, and I have found that applying to a role online and then sending a cold email to the hiring manager or someone in the group works wonders to getting them on the phone, especially if the person is a former banker and is used to this.
Primarily the same firm I'm with. Both new, and former analysts with the firm who have since "graduated" to better positions but with other firms.
As someone with 15yrs in the industry what do you think would be interesting topics to ask about that might provide someone like myself more insights about the team, the people, and what the projects/work was like?
On the other end what do think would be some topics that would be inappropriate or turn offs for you? Comp, Google-able questions, etc.
I would do some homework on the firm and what they do so that you have something to talk about. Ask them about recent work, their opinion on what you've read about recent industry changes, etc.
