MF REPE Offer vs IB

Hey peeps,

Writing here for a friend that asked for advice, which I didn't really know how to answer. His situation is the following: European target, failed to get London IB SA (1 superday though) for his penultimate year. Did internships at top regional VC and European REPE shop. From that last experience got an offer (networking was key) for an off-cycle internship at a MF doing RE PE starting January 2023. Signed offer by now.

He tells me that he doesn't see himself in RE, would prefer Corp PE long-term (but really likes the brand value of the MF). He would like to do IB first for that, typical argument of "best training ground for the reps". He still has one year of uni left (but 6 months can be used for an internship). His choices are basically:

(1) Recruit for Off Cycle IB. In case an offer is given, ditch MF for IB. Reneging an offer seems bad - would love to know your inputs on this

(2) Do REPE MF Off Cycle + Recruit for SA IB as a final year. Don't know if two RE PE shops would look bad on a resume: too much focus on a certain sector? Typical Q of: do you really want to do IB? Maybe the MF brand compensates for this.

  • Option 2 can go other ways: maybe he ultimately loves RE PE and in case they give him an analyst offer, he could stay at MF. Either way, could he recruit for IB or CorpPE from that position? Only if he does an MBA?

Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!
