What can I do about my GPA?

I am a student @ a semi-target. I have a cumulative GPA of ~3.6. I had a networking call w/an alum at a top buyside firm and he said that my GPA was too low for them to even look at me.

After some digging, I told him the reason my GPA is not higher--I used to be a STEM major and I did very poorly in a science class my freshman year (I got an F). He told me that I should put my major GPA instead (I'm an econ major). I thought this was a good idea.

I've only taken two actual economics classes, and I got a B in one of them so my major GPA is even lower than my real one. If you don't consider science classes (or that one class, really) my GPA would be a ~3.8. It sounds kind of stupid to put "non-science GPA" or something like that though. Is there anything I can do to fluff up my GPA?

My major GPA is lower than my cGPA though, shouldn't I just leave it off?

3.6 isn't even low, just apply to other firms

Agreed, I’ve seen analyst hires with good work experience and like 3.3-3.5 gpa bounds

I think 3.6 is fine.  Hopefully once you get more classes under your major, the major GPA can go even higher than that.  But I also think you're overreacting a bit...it's hard to get positions directly out of undergrad, particularly from a semi-target, at top buyside firms (depends on what you mean by "buyside" specifically I suppose), so I don't read all that much into his comment to you.
