Flying up to New York from Australia to get a job
Hi everyone,
I’ve been interviewing a lot (over Zoom) these last couple months and have come close to a formal offer at my dream job except the team couldn’t get HR/legal to approve my application due to visa constraints in Australia.
I’ve booked flights to NY for 3.5 weeks in late August hoping to reignite these processes, meet up with my interviewers in person and connecting with some fresh faces for new opportunities.
I’m worried I’ll look desperate reaching out 7 weeks in advance and flying out halfway across the world but I’m committed to the move and want to show that. Does anyone have any tips on how I should go about it / anything I should know about timing? E.g. I know late August is the week everyone goes on holidays and I should aim for a weekday as bankers really value their weekends.
Thank you and wish me luck :)
What are you hoping to accomplish with this trip? If they couldn’t approve you due to visa constraints, what changes those constraints by you flying to NY for a bit?
Sure, you can set up some coffee chats with your interviewers. But if they can’t get you a visa, are you hoping they will change their minds and pay for it?
Unclear if they are even open to changing their minds, and I fear that this will be a big waste of your money and time. Regardless, if you’re dead set on making the trip, try to schedule a bunch of coffee chats when you’re there.
It’s a good point. The team said they would let me know if anything changes so I was thinking it would be good to connect again in person to keep me front of mind.
I also think it’s more compelling to see people in person - it’s harder to push for a random’s application when they are halfway across the world.
Regardless, I’ve always wanted to see the city and need a holiday so it seemed opportunistic!
If you’re planning a vacation around this then it makes sense. Just when it comes to Visa issues (which are largely a legal thing / cost a firm a lot of money) I don’t think an additional coffee chat is going to change anything. But then again, it’s worth a shot.
Best of luck!
If its a visa issue I'm not sure if meeting in person would change a single thing. Sadly its incredibly costly and time consuming to sponsor individuals unless they are top class of what they do.
If you are going on holiday ALREADY, I guess it makes sense. However, I wouldn't spend all the money to fly to NYC, stay there for 3.5 weeks (cost of food and housing) just to be "front of mind". Please save that money and continue coffee chats and networking from Australia.
Wishing you the best of luck but please don't waste money or time in such a complicated situation that isn't in your control / your fault.
