Watch what you/ your friends/ significant others post on social media
I have been seeing some stupid shit posted on social media
I saw some girl on TikTok post a video about her investment banker boyfriend and how much he works.
in the video the guy was working on a slide deck at his desk in his apartment. In the video you could see the banks logo in the corner, and there was very clear, readable MNPI in the slide.
I’ve even seen TikToks of bankers posting themselves at meetings with clients. I remember one analyst posted walking around their clients office or factory or whatever it was.
I am just wondering where the common sense is?
There isn't any because they're too high on the idea of being "tiktok famous" or "instagram famous" instead of a consumate professional. Those idiots are about to be famous alright. Famous for being new examples in onboarding materials regarding NDAs, NPI, liability, code of conduct in lieu of being a public face of your employer, etc.
Now I want to see any follow up stories about how fast and hard those 'tards got fired and blackballed or even facing down subpoenas or other legal actions.
I don't disagree about posts involving MNPI and the lack of carefulness around work product (an issue on WFH)
But what's wrong with the idea of being tiktok or insta famous?
There's nothing inherintly wrong with it. The problem comes when people value the validation they get from all the likes and reposts higher than, or at least as high as, risking their professional career to get that attention. That is to say, if you want to be "instafamous" for videos of you taunting great whites outside the cage or punching tiger sharks for fun? I know I'd watch that! But if you want it to be about your career, be smart about it and show some discretion because that girl tiktok'ing about you building pitch decks in the background isn't going to be discrete because it's for her likes, and at the possible expense of your career.
Social media is a cancer and it will kill your career like stage 4 pancreatic if you use it like a moron. I don't know any top performers who are particularly active on it, many I'm friends with don't even have accounts. It's nothing but a time suck and depends on playing to the lowest common denominator, which if you want to be successful in this industry is the polar opposite of what your superiors and clients expect of you.
What are your opinions on the LinkedIn losers who post on it daily with inspirational quotes and other nonsense
You already answered the question, correctly I might add. If you need to post about how impressive, honored, or inspired you are, you are none of those things.
Isn't WSO technically social media?
I mean, technically yes. When I say social media I more broadly mean these massive algo-driven rage fests whose goal is to aggregate as many users as possible and then monetize with tons of user data tracking and ad placement. WSO doesn't fit that mold so I give it a pass, plus there's genuinely useful information and insightful people here vs most of the crap you'll see on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc.
.
ok thanks for sharing with the class
Moral of the story: Don't date a chic who uses TikTok
Unless she is hot.
No, not even then.
>be anon
>date hot girl i found on tiktok, she thinks im rich
>cant tell her i only make 170k as an1
>keeps telling her friends about her banker bigshot bf
>she makes dumb dancing video with the hashtag investmentbanker and goldmansachs
>video shows logo of "company x" with title "proposed acquisition by company y" underneath
>video gets 7.4 mil views
>company x stock moons 72% the day after
>gets email from compliance
>says to expect a search and seize from sec this weekend
>am fucked
Found Sorkin lurking here, trawling for new plots for Billions
Now you're just giving ideas to pump & dumpers
Lol, I make AI for the military even though my girl is Russian and I often visit her family... I really need to switch industries..
x
that's why banks should hire more 25+ year olds and less ~20 year olds.
MBA associates are expensive tho.
nah I meant Analysts from people with experience in other industries (big 4, etc.)
